You listen to what people say when they are at the end of their lives. They have lived and served – they have experienced majestic highs and devastating lows. They have seen the best of life and faith and they have seen the worst of it. So when they get to the very end of their life, I listen carefully to what they say.
From the age of 80 to 120, this Hero of the Faith had seen it all. God had spent the first 80 years of the life of Moses preparing him for his final 40. Moses spent 40 years as the crown prince of Egypt. Moses then spent 40 years as a shepherd in the wilderness. The final 40 years, he led the children of Israel out of Egypt and took them to the verge of the Promised Land.
The final chapter of Deuteronomy describes Moses on the day of his death as being 120 years old, “yet his eyes were not weak, nor his strength gone.”
God had certainly sustained and strengthened him.
“Moses the servant of the Lord died there” (Deuteronomy 34:5)
- It was not “Moses, Prince of Egypt.”
- It was not “Moses, Murderer of an Egyptian.”
- It was not “Moses, Shepherd in the Wilderness.”
- It was not “Moses, Spokesman for a Nation.”
- It was not “Moses, Miracle Worker.”
- It was not “Moses, Prophet.”
- It was not “Moses, the Man Who Saw a Piece of God’s Glory.”
- It was not “Moses, Who Never Entered the Promised Land.”
- At the end of it all, the title was simple: Moses the servant of the Lord.

As I read the final chapters of Deuteronomy and the commentary that goes with it, Moses and his words echoed down the centuries.
So what are some of the final words this Giant of the Faith say to God’s people?
Deuteronomy 33:26-27
“There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides on the heavens to help you and on the clouds in His majesty. The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.”
Those words are so comforting. God is always looking over us, riding on the heavens, high and lifted up. He is always there, available for us to call on. We dwell secure in knowing the Lord. We are in His Grip, more firmly than we could ever imagine. He is around us, above us, underneath us, on each side of us and through His Holy Spirit, He dwells within our hearts.
It doesn’t get more secure than that.
These are the days.
Keep the smile going.
God bless you!
In His Grip,
Helga xx 🙂
