Family Members Can Now Visit Marli

While the fires were raging in Cape Town, another news report came out about the van Breda murder case. But the blaze made it take second place. It’s good news that the fires are mostly out and it’s good news that Marli can have visitors.

After a month of being kept away from all visitors, she is now allowed to see her family, but whether that includes her older brother Henri is unknown.

According to News24, Marli has been told that her parents and older brother were killed that night. Marli is much better, with her wounds having healed well. Her state of mind and the extent of her brain injury are not disclosed. She is able to say a few words, but not whole sentences. Brain injuries can take a long time to heal.

The report explains that she has still not given a statement to the police. She has been able to have visitors from last Thursday already.

A little more insight is given ….

News report about Henri van Breda

Still no one has been arrested.

The news of visitors being allowed to see Marli did not come out in the media immediately. By Sunday, Netwerk24 were still reporting that she was being isolated from her family. That report also explained a few of the details of Martin van Breda’s wealth. His two children will inherit a sizeable fortune.

It’s a big question: Did Henri do it?

I sincerely hope he is not guilty, but if there was no chance at all he was involved in this unspeakable tragedy, somehow I feel his actions would be so very different.

  • He would be speaking to the media.
  • He would be giving an identikit of the attacker, seeing as he could say that a man attacked with incredible strength and say in which order they were killed.
  • He would be at his sister’s bedside every single day, willing her to live, guarding her, protecting her, loving her.

Instead Henri is holed up in the home of  an uncle and aunt in the northern suburbs of Cape Town. Remaining behind closed doors and away from the public eye, I am sure life can not be easy for any of the family right now.

This is certainly not how things were supposed to have panned out. When these things happen, they are out of our realm of understanding. The only way for the family to cope is to do the next thing. Just do what needs to be done. Get through the next day. If that seems to long, choose the next hour, the next 5 minutes. Just keep going. Despite dreadful circumstances, life just does not stop. It just keeps going. There will always be pain and longing, but time will soften the deepness of the wounds. My go-to Bible verse when I think about devastating tragedy is always Psalm 34:18

God is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

God will never abandon us regardless of what we go through. He knows our name and He is constantly with us, regardless of who we are or what we have done.

It’s not about here and now. This is our ‘home for now’. There is a much better one to come.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga x
