Climbing to the Cave

Monday

Today was the day…

I climbed to the cave at Avalon Springs.  Mike was feeling lazy so he stayed behind. I set off not realising that it’s probably not the kind of thing to do alone.

To get to the trail, I crossed a river…despite all the rain, fortunately it wasn’t raging…

And started up the trail…

There were useful arrows to show the way…

And then began the steps! There were 108 steps to the first cave – most were very steep and had a chain rope to grab…

And up and up…

The resort from half way up…

Arrived at the first cave…

Then I saw there were more steps and I had to see where those went…I counted them…

There were 73 to the next ridge and then….then….then….there was this!

Oh well, here we go.

Very, very carefully and slowly, I climbed the ladder and after I got to the top, just a short distance ahead was the top cave!

I reached my destination, so I took a photo…

And as I could see our room, I phoned Mike and he came outside and took a photo of me…can you see me in the pic below? Tiny white dot in the cave in the middle of the mountain.

Okay, I guess it’s a struggle so I zoomed in…

And then I came down again, including down the treacherous ladder (you can see the sheer drop on the left of the cave – that’s where the ladder is). I don’t know why I took this photo as it meant taking my cell phone out of my pocket and using one hand to take it. I guess it’s just a reminder for my future self that at the age of 55 and 3/4 I did this!

I was grateful to arrive back safe and sound. As you can imagine, so was Mike!

This afternoon, I had an afternoon sleep which was marvellous. This evening, we will have a take away at the resort cafe.

It’s been a super little break. The internet is great.

It’s the last day of August. Amazing.
