An Extra Day

Saturday – Leap Year 2020

I don’t know what it is with people! They just done share my enthusiasm for the 29th February.  I bounded out of bed this morning rejoicing in  the gift of an extra day. This day I won’t get next year or the year after or even the year after that. It will only come around again in 2024, yet when I expressed my excitement over getting this bonus day, everyone looked at me as if I was slightly, just slightly, mad.

Starting with Mike who shook his head – “it’s artificial, my love,” he said. 😅

“I don’t care,” I said, “I won’t get the 29th Feb for 4 more years. I’m going to rejoice in it. And so I left him at home working and I went off to do something special and different. I started with a visit to Hi-Brow where I had a pedicure. My feet really enjoyed it…a pedicure with Prudence…

Happy feet…

Then I went shopping. I set myself a R500 budget and bought two lovely tops. On the way back through the Mall, I stopped to speak to a guy in a wheelchair. I had seen him parked off on the side of the Mall on my way through. When he was still there on my return, I decided to ask if he was waiting for someone. He explained he was waiting for his nurse. This seems to be their Saturday routine. He lives not far from Echo Rd. on Highway with his nurse as his full-time carer. This Saturday outing for the nurse to do the shopping is the only time he goes out each week. His name is John and he is 83 years old. He came from the UK where he had a broken marriage and has lived on and off in Cape Town for 40 years. Ten years ago he came here permanently. He had never spent a night in hospital until he had a nasty car accident three years ago and broke his right leg in three places and now he can’t walk on his own. Hence the wheelchair.  We talked about cricket and we talked about the stairs in his house. After some chit-chat (including how wonderful 29th Feb was – at which he also looked confused), I went on my way, but I know his address and may stop by to have tea one day.

Then I went to Riana’s for tea. While we were chatting an unexpected thing happened. Meggy, who is the Queen of the Beretta household, jumped down from the back of the couch and came and lay down right next to me. Wow! This was approval from the most lofty member of the home. I was surely privileged at such attention. I’m sure she remembers the many Truffles food treats she had when visiting us.

Riana also shook her head when I told her how we should all be enjoying this day a little bit more.  I came home after a delightful few relaxing hours.

Tomorrow is David’s birthday. Perhaps that’s why I also love 29th February. David was born the day after Mike’s birthday and with Mike’s birthday being 28th Feb, I’m wallowing in the joy the next day bought, even though at the time it was 1st March.

Julian arrives a little later on this evening, so we’ll be off to the airport to pick him up.

Psalm 73:24

You guide me with Your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny.

These are the days.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Helga xx 🙂
