I’ve been reading recently and seeing what pretty much brings us back to the basics of this life. Stripping away the non-essentials to uncover what really counts. As humans, care-takers of the earth, citizens of the planet at this moment in time, we have responsibilities.
If you consider what we are made of as people, we are multi-faceted. We have all these different components that make us tick.
- We are physical, embracing our bodies, our ability to touch, taste, smell, see, hear and pro-create.
- We have a psychological component – our thoughts, mental capacity and emotional status have a large influence on how we feel.
- We are social – we need people and we are products of our family, our upbringing and our culture.
- We are spiritual – we have an inner being – it’s our soul – our core spirit that will live on when we die.
All of this works together to make us functional. Each component is inter-twined and impacts the other. When one part suffers, the whole being is affected.
For me, as a follower of Christ, the most important facet is my spiritual inner self.
What I do with it is what counts. If I nurture it and feed it with what God has given me to do just that, then it will grow. It will impact how I look after my body, how I think, how I socialise. It will be the solid foundation of my life while I walk this earth. And so that’s what I do. God has given me direction as to how to live. I find that in the Bible – God’s Word. Often times when I read the Bible, words I’ve never seen before jump out at me and make me look a little closer. Today, I read a verse deep in the heart of the Old Testament. It’s a seldom read book – the book of Ezekiel. Written around 2500 years ago, words jumped out that rang a familiar bell for the life we live today. It all had to do with three words:
Arrogant. Overfed. Unconcerned
These three words conjure up an image of fat pride.
Many will remember the story of Sodom & Gomorrah. These negative traits were on display in Sodom.
Ezekiel 16:49
“Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.”
Written in ancient times, yet they strike a familiar tone in what we often see in the world today: a general apathy towards those in need. An arrogance and flaunting of wealth & opulence leaps across our TV screens. “Nobody cares” is a worldwide cancer that eats away at communities far and wide. This should not be.
These words today were a reminder as to how I need to behave as a citizen of the planet. I need to be humble. I must not be gluttonous with food or anything else. And I need to care more.
Lord Jesus, I lay my life before You. Help me to use the resources You have given me to benefit others. For Your glory.
Keep the smile going.
God bless you!
In His Grip,
Helga xx 🙂
