A Somber Sight

It was around 12-30 lunchtime, that we started hearing masses of sirens. Then we heard a helicopter very low. I went outside to have a look. Traffic was backed up over Ou Kaapse Weg. Mike and I locked the house and took a walk up to the main intersection behind us. An emergency (government) helicopter had landed a short distance away. There had been an awful accident. What we heard was that a drunk driver, driving a white Mercedes-Benz had overtaken a tourist bus and ploughed head on into a small white car.

It was a somber sight.

News from social media said a quick thinking taxi driver used his fire extinguisher to spray the small white car preventing it from bursting into flames. According to reports the occupants of the white car were a lady from Masi and her young daughter. She was very badly injured. Emergency personnel stabilized her on the scene and then she was loaded onto the Medivac air ambulance…

Mike and I stood on the side of the road and prayed. I hope she will be okay. She looked young. She was airlifted to hospital. I’m not sure which one but they took off and flew over the mountain.

The traffic was at a standstill. Cars had driven off Kommetjie Road and lined up on the road works section of the road watching proceedings unfold.

Then just a few hours later, there were more sirens and I watched a number of emergency vehicles take off up Ou Kaapse Weg. I’m not sure what was going on there but apparently it involved a motor cyclist. It was a busy day for the Peninsula emergency crew. They are wonderful.

Mike & I went to church at 8am and then stopped by the Mall for some shopping. Back home, it has been a restful day. Apart from the above, on list of things I did:

  1. Bible reading,
  2. Church
  3. Chat to Stacey (yay!)
  4. David came for lunch.
  5. Afternoon sleep!

David is playing bass at his church this evening, so I am going to that service as well.

David bought his acoustic guitar so we could hear what it sounded like with new strings. It was fabulous, so for my records, these are the strings of preference: 12 gauge Elixir phosphor-bronze steel string guitar strings. I’m not sure of the exact year that David got his acoustic guitar – it could have been about 7 or 8 years ago. All I remember is how we got it. We ordered it from the US. Pastor John was going across and kindly agreed to bring it back to South Africa for us.  David didn’t know about it. He was thrilled. It was such a huge risk buying a guitar without trying it out first. But Mike always does his homework on these things and all the reviews were brilliant. David has since said it was the best purchase we have ever made for him. He uses it all the time and it sounds brilliant. It’s heart-warming to hear. Pastor John went to a lot of trouble getting it back for us and we will always appreciate him for it.  The people from whom he was collecting it had such a lot of respect for Pastor John, they initially turned us down and said they didn’t think it was fair for us to ask him. Mike felt truly embarrassed and immediately withdrew the request. When Pastor John heard this he was absolutely adamant to bring it back. True friendship. It was worth the schlep. It’s appreciated every day. It’s the one on the far left.

# 579 of my 1000 thanks is for David’s Alvarez and the blessing it has been. Lord, please bless each person involved in that transaction.

John 16:13

When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth.

These are the days.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
