From time to time I have publishers or PR companies contact me to ask me if I would like to receive a new Banting book that has come out. I always say yes! This one focuses on why we get fat and what we can do about it.
The introduction is made up of Martina’s story. She really struggled with a lack of energy and brain fog. While at university she learned the importance of cutting sugar and carbs and discovered that most ailments stem from one source within the body: inflammation.
While the title is Understanding LCHF, the explanation is that this is a ketogenic diet. Johannsson explains that a ketogenic diet is primarily geared towards natural and unprocessed foods, completely free of additives. If you have ever wondered about the meaning of the ketones and ketosis, it is explained clearly in this book. She talks about good fats and bad fats and getting into fat burning mode. There’s an excellent chapter on cholesterol and how that works in the body.
This whole thing has absolutely become a science and a complex one at that.
I wish I could say that there were some simple solutions – the three steps to getting it right, but there are not. I know that what I eat impacts how I feel. I feel better when I eat better, more wholesome food. When I don’t, I feel bloated, but it is difficult not to occasionally indulge in some of my favourites – like licorice, dark chocolate and my favourite: a chocolate croissant.
Eating real food is the answer. Loads of fresh vegetables is going to be healthy in anyone’s book. One thing I have also discovered is that I don’t need to eat as much as I do. Two meals a day works well – late breakfast, coffee at lunch and then dinner. Monday to Friday that works well for me.
I feel at my best when I am Banting, but I have never managed to fully get the ketogenic thing going. I need to read more of this book to see exactly how it works.
Meantime, it’s been a full day and Mike is waiting for me to go and walk around the block with him.
I’ve been reading Psalm 37.
Psalm 37:34
Wait for the Lord and keep His way.
I like that. Simple.
These are the days.
Keep the smile going.
God bless you!
In His Grip,
Helga xx 🙂
