It took us all of 25 hours to get from Cape Town to Vietri Sul Mare, the gateway to Italy’s Amalfi Coast. But what a lovely little place it is.
Mike and I took off around 2pm, arrived in Dubai 9 hours later. We left Dubai at 1-30am Cape Town time, arriving in Rome at 7-30am. After disembarking and making our way to the exit along with hundreds of other travellers, one of the best highlights of the day occurred. We got to passport control. Julian said to me, ‘this is where we have to part company with Mike.” As Mike has a SA passport, he had to get in the main queue, while Julian and I went to find the EU passport holders queue. There was only one person in that queue. The official at the line, checked our passports and I made a comment about my poor husband being in the other queue. “Why?” she asked. “If he is your husband, he must come with you!” I ran back to the queue, which had by now probably had close to 400 people could even be more than that. I walked down the line looking and not seeing Mike. Eventually, I put my hand up and started calling, “Mike! Mike! Mike van Niekerk!” He appeared in the thick mass of people and started making his way over to me. “Come with me!” I triumphantly said. Taking him by the hand, we walked past the burgeoning queue and round the corner. With no one in the EU queue, we went straight to the counter. Within three minutes, we were through! I will always remember that. Never again when we travel, will I leave Mike to languish in the non-EU passport queue.
Once we had retrieved our luggage, we made our way out of the terminal building, following the bus route. For Euro 5-90 each, we climbed on the bus that would take us to Termini station. With the traffic, it took an hour, but we went past the Colosseum…
From there we bought train tickets to Salerno and got on the 11-26 train bound for that town. It rolled in about 3 hours later. We then bought bus tickets and caught the bus to neighbouring Vietri Sul Mare and that was where we found our BnB…
It is situated in the middle of the town on the same square as the Duomo which has a bell tower of note. This is the bell tower from our room…
And this is it from the square…
The bells toll every 15 minutes!!
The BnB has a spectacular terrace with majestic views of the start of the Amalfi coast line…
The view extends 180…over rooftops
This is looking directly down from the terrace…
It’s quite a place. We went for a walk and found an Italian cat…
Three hours or more later, we went out for dinner and not much had changed…
The weather has been fabulous. We managed to have a nap which helped to beat off the lack of overnight sleep.
#432 of my 1000 thanks is that we arrived safely and had no travel issues.
Isaiah 58:11
The LORD will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.
Sounds good to me!
Tomorrow we mooch around the Amalfi coast.
These are the days!
Keep the smile going!
God bless you!
In His Grip,
Helga xx 🙂
