Oh boy! Oh boy! Oh boy! The world of health and food has certainly been thrown into a spin with the suggestion of eating LCHF (Low Carb, High Fat). I think the main concern that most people have is the HF part! High Fat? How can we eat High Fat??? That just is such a fallacy! Fat can’t be good for you! I’ve said already on this blog that there needs to be clarification of what fat is and isn’t which I wrote about on this page-: The Basics of LCHF
Because we have been indoctrinated with a low-fat message for so long – we know no other way – it is extremely difficult for those millions of people across the world to even begin to imagine that eating a diet high in fat could vaguely be okay. They just can’t imagine doing it. It just CAN’T be good for us. So medical promoters of LCHF (Prof Tim Noakes in South Africa, Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt in Sweden, Dr. Richard Bernstein in the USA & Dr. John Briffa from the UK) have got their work cut out for them convincing the sceptics.
Even though I have been eating this way for the last 10 months and even though I have not lost the stubborn 5kg I would like to shed, I have experienced so many benefits from eating LCHF that I can’t stop! So here’s a healthy suggestion for those who just can’t get their head around eating high fat…. start with Low Carb. Start cutting out sugar and carbohydrates. And see how you feel. Only eat the healthy stuff, but increase protein so that you don’t get hungry.
I searched the web high and low to find a simple explanation why the body needs fat. I found the answer on this website: http://www.eatingdisordersonline.com/nutritional/fats.php
“Why do we need fat in our diet?
~ Fat provides needed energy. It is difficult to eat the large amounts of food in a very low fat diet to get all the energy you need.
~ Fat is needed to prevent essential fatty acid deficiency.
~ Fat is needed so your body can absorb the fat soluble vitamins A, S, E, K, and prevent deficiencies of these vitamins.
~ Fat provides flavor and texture to help prevent food from being bland and dry.
~ Fat helps food to stay in the stomach longer, giving a greater sense of satisfaction and preventing hunger soon after meals.
~ Fat may help your body produce endorphins (natural substances in the brain that produce pleasurable feelings).
~ Diets too low in fat may trigger cravings.”
I’ll tell you what is amazing as I have surfed the fat side of the internet, I’ve discovered that 2/3 of the human brain is composed of fat. From this website (http://www.fi.edu/learn/brain/fats.html#faintelligence) comes this explanation: ”
Membranes – the Working Surface of Your Brain is Made from Fatty Acids –
“The membranes of neurons – the specialized brain cells that communicate with each other – are composed of a thin double-layer of fatty acid molecules. Fatty acids are what dietary fats are composed of. When you digest the fat in your food, it is broken down into fatty acid molecules of various lengths. Your brain then uses these for raw materials to assemble the special types of fat it incorporates into its cell membranes.”
The website has got some amazing information in it. … it is also very “evolution” based. Personally, I believe that God created man and that we began eating high fat meat 6000 years ago.
High fat food you should not be avoiding includes any and all free range or pasture fed meat & poultry, eggs, fatty fish such as salmon & pilchards, avocado pear, olive oil, coconut oil and cream. That’s why these kinds of foods must be included in your diet. Feeding our brain a high fat diet has so many advantages it’s scary to imagine we have been depriving ourselves by following a low fat diet for so many years. The above-cited article also explains how many psychiatric and mood disorders are also related to less brain fat.
There is a there’s a very concise and simple beginners guide to Low Carb and High fat eating here – with the Diet Doctor…
I want to say there is some great wisdom in researching all of this for yourself. There’s balance to be had in LCHF, but the starting point if you are freaked out by fat, is to cut out sugar and cut down on carbs.
Talking of wisdom, I love the wisdom of Solomon! Solomon’s experience of life way back in 930BC (3000 years ago) turns up many similarities today.
Proverbs 23:4-5 says, “Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone…”
It is an amazing thought that everything you see around you right now will perish – the cell phone in your hand or the computer before you, the walls around you, the chair on which you sit. Nothing will last except people! We can’t take anything with us when we die, so it is wise advice to find balance in this life and spend more time on relationships than things!
Thanks for stopping by! More tomorrow.
God bless you loads!
In His Grip,
Helga xx 🙂
