Walking from Constantia Nek to Kirstenbosch…

8-22pm

What a lovely day today has been. The day dawned with a few fluffy white clouds drifting past our house…

With Mike having just about fully recovered from this week’s surgery, we decided an outing was in order, so we packed a backpack picnic and headed off to Constantia Nek, (which always seems to appear in Afrikaans)…

The arrows in red show our route.

This is looking up the road from the car park…

It’s beautiful walking in the forest. Our destination was to be Kirstenbosch. An easy walk takes you past lots of interesting features, including…

This is an art gallery, boutique and coffee shop! We didn’t stop to browse, instead we continued admiring some exclusive Cape Town Real Estate – Constantia Winelands…

And not much further on, a beautiful view of False Bay…

After that we took a bit of a detour…

But eventually arrived here…

We found a picnic spot on a viewing platform. This was the view…

And this is me…under a tree…

After our picnic lunch, we got back on the road…

The details of the trail: Park at Constantia Nek car park – on the opposite side of the road to the restaurant. There is a car guard on duty. Walk up the road on the left of the car park past the houses and straight on beyond the sign. It’s an easy, pleasant forest walk. You’ll soon get to a split in the road. The upper road has a boom. Take the lower road which will take you past  Art in the Forest. Continue on and you will soon get to a bend with a river running across the road (just a trickle of water). There is also a bench to sit on if you need a rest. Shortly after that, you get to a fork in the road. Take the left road which takes you higher. You’ll pass the magnificent view of False Bay. Continuing on, you find yourself, believe it or not, coming up to a house. The road veers right down past the fence. After a short while, you come to a T-junction – turn left and continue walking until you get to a big isolated tree. You will see a reservoir ahead of you and on the right, down a little road, you’ll see the Kirstenbosch sign.

The walk will take an hour there and an hour back. We so enjoyed it. Make sure you paste sunblock on as you are not entirely in forest. Probably only about half the walk is in shade, so it’s worth taking a hat and lots of water!

Mike is like the energiser bunny! Even after all that walking, he decided to go via the nursery and we bought loads of plants and garden things. As soon as we arrived home, he got stuck in, with me playing a very low key, second fiddle…

After that, dinner happened, Granny was put to bed and I spent a goodly amount of time on this blog! Mike is now suggesting an evening walk on Fish Hoek Beach. It’s such a lovely evening, how can I resist?

And that Ladies and Gentlemen, is how we spent the pen-ultimate day of 2011!

Psalm 96.12 says Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy.

I’m sure they did today! We enjoyed them!

Lots of love and blessings for the new year.

In His grip,

Helga xx đŸ™‚
