There Has To Be Some Self-Control

12-57pm

It doesn’t matter what kind of lifestyle you try to embrace, be it Banting or calorie counting or any type of weight-loss diet, there has to be some sort of self-control. I generally could be considered queen of food temptation. I would fall at the first hurdle. Put liquorice or chocolate inLiquorice-Twists-150g- my path and I struggle to resist it. This is at the forefront of my mind because last night Mike came home ‘with a surprise’…one of my biggest ‘dangerous’ weaknesses Woolworths liquorice.

I would have eaten all 5, except Mike had one. I gobbled them down, showing no signs of vague hesitation or restraint. Boom! Gone! And then I had the entire night to regret my lack of self-control. Every time I woke up, I tasted sugar in my mouth…my veins had to be full of it!

The interesting thing with me about carbs and sugar is that I don’t lose weight when I’m avoiding  them and I don’t gain weight when I am eating them.

BUT, I have to admit that when I am off them, I feel so much better. I think there are a few things to do to help with self-control.

1. Move the sugar from out of the house. When you get rid of all the junk food in your house such as biscuits, crackers, chips and cooldrink, you are removing temptation from your way. You can’t eat what’s not there, so get rid of it.

Biscuits crossed out2. Substitute good for bad. As Christmas approaches and the temptation rises to eat more treats, it’s time to get serious about substituting healthy ingredients for bad. If you have to make biscuits, use xylitol in place of sugar and almond flour in place of sugar. That will immediately improve the nutritional value of the treat.

3. Eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full. Get with the programme in keeping in tune with what your stomach says. Eat foods that will satisfy you, such as eggs and avocados. When you are full stop. This particular applies to ‘snacking’ kind of foods such as almonds….

It’s easy to wolf down the whole packet!

4. Be aware of what you are eating. Even if you are Banting, calories count. Eating High Fat Low Carb is not a broad licence to over eat tons of cream, eggs and meat. A 300g steak has 750 calories. One avocado has 322 calories (and 17g carbs). Add 80 calories for a quarter cup of feta cheese and your avo and feta salad with a steak = 1000 calories on one meal. If you are not losing weight while Banting, it could be you are eating too many calories.

5. Get out and get moving. There has to be self-control in getting exercise as well. Instead of being a couch potato, start working those muscles. Exercise is not only about burning calories, it’s about strengthening muscles, loosening joints and stretching ligaments.

Find the balance in life. Enjoy a treat, but don’t go overboard. Have a ‘slack-attack’  but don’t make it a lifestyle. Aim for 80% self-control and 20% relaxing the rules a bit. And when you stumble, just get up the next day and start again!

Philippians 4:5

Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand;

Be reasonable!

Good reminder.

Keep the smile going!

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
