So late last week, David went to friends in Noordhoek for dinner and music….a great combination! On leaving later in the evening, sitting right in front of his car was a very sickly looking animal. At first David thought it was a cat, but as he approached it, it tried to hop away and he realised it was an owl.
David and his friends, Jacob and Caroline, immediately started trying to figure out what to do with this sad looking bird. With the wonderful benefit of instant hand-held information, they Googled what to do with an injured owl and soon discovered that these creatures are highly sensitive and the fear and shock of being handled while so vulnerable can be the end of them. They also read to get a cardboard box, put holes in it and put the bird in the box until you can get it to help. Being late at night, they set about putting this plan into action.
David was allocated the chore of catching the owl. Aware of his talons, David carefully threw a towel over it and then scooped it up and gently put it in the box. It didn’t fight back. Clearly very ill, no one expected it to live through the night.
Jacob and Caroline kept it at their home. They initially planned on taking it to the World of Birds, but discovered online that there was a birdman in Noordhoek. On Friday morning, with the owl still alive, they took it to his home where he had a cage prepared.
Today David received this photo….
Our spotted eagle owl is making a fine recovery and will soon be let back into his natural habitat.
I wondered what was wrong with him. David said he was told that sometimes they eat rats that have been poisoned and then they get hit with the ill-effects.
So glad to see he is well again.
I’m reminded that God knows the fate of all His creatures…
Matthew 10:29
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.
Mr Owl gets to live another day….(or maybe Mrs!)
Keep the smile going!
God bless you!
In His Grip,
