The Ethics of Helping Granny Sleep….

11-32am

I’ve been wondering about the ethics of giving Granny a night-time sedative! After her fall a couple of weeks ago, we figured we needed to do something to prevent her from wandering around the house at night. We thought of getting a baby monitor and then I would hear her. But it meant that I would need to get up and run around after her at night as well,  something I would prefer not to do. When I spoke to her daughter – my sister-in-law, who lives in Pretoria, she suggested tripoline which is used in depression, but also as a sleeping tablet. I went to the chemist the other day and asked them to suggest something. I told them she is on no medication and never takes anything to make her sleep. The lady was a bit concerned that they would give her something too strong, so she took me to the herbal shelf and suggested this…

TabletsThis is what I read on line: “Biral is a natural product of plant origin which acts on the central nervous system to bring about a mild sedative action.”

I’ve given it to her over the last two nights and it has worked like a bomb! She doesn’t question anything I give her, but just takes it obediently, which makes me feel quite responsible. I’ve said before on this blog, she is so vulnerable and now very dependent. Last night I put her to bed at 7pm and she woke up at 9am this morning!  If it keeps her safe at night, its job is done. Much better than tripoline. I think it is a good place to start. I’ll see how it goes over the next few nights.

Meantime, my break from CCFm continues. This is the first Sunday in probably the last 52 that I haven’t had to concern myself about ‘show prep for Monday’. 🙂

Today I finished reading through the Bible!!  I’ve put the marker and my pen on 1st Jan and on Tuesday, I will start again.  In the closing chapters of the Old Testament, good advice to remember for 2013: Malachi 3:10 “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. “

God bless you loads!

In His Grip,

Helga xx
