It’s been one of the most irritating things these many months. Behind my house there is a retirement village being built, but in order to prepare the land, it has to be flattened. To achieve this, they do the most unbelievable thing. They have a massive crane – in fact there are a few of them. From my desk the crane look like this…
They position the crane over the spot they want to flatten and then they winch up this multi-tonne concrete slab and drop it!
As it hits the ground, the earth moves and a tremor is felt across the entire neighbourhood. Many months ago, an engineer visited each of the homes on our street. He took photos of the houses, taking note of any cracks. He had been commissioned by an insurance company in case the tremors caused some structural damage to the surrounding buildings. One of the biggest issues we didn’t anticipate is the humongous amount of dust that ensued from this exercise.
The windows are covered with dust. I’ve been hesitating to clean them because they are just going to get covered again when the flattening starts the next day.
As I have watched the weight being dropped, from my position, it seems so small. It is a tedious and drawn out exercise and I’m not sure when it will be finished. Sometimes the crane is not outside my window, but further up the road tormenting some other innocent resident.
But one day, they will be finished. Time passes by so quickly. This time next year, there will probably be houses in the process of being built or perhaps even completed. The cranes and the dust will be a swiftly diminishing memory.
There are things in this life that we cannot control. But we can, each of us, control our attitude towards them. Getting hot and bothered often times achieves nothing. Accepting the discomfort and making the most of time as it passes is the only way I really know how to deal with irritations.
And of course, having a cup of coffee, which always lifts my spirits and puts an extra spring in my step and a larger smile on my face.
Psalm 90:12
“Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”
Life is passing folks. Far too quickly. Jump on the train of life and enjoy what you have!
Keep the smile going.
God bless you!
In His Grip,
