Plumbing Problem

Don’t you love it when you have a plumbing problem that turns out to be minor? That’s what happened this week. David contacted us the other day to say that there was an issue with one of the pipes under the laundry sink. Instead of the water going down the pipe, it had acquired a hole and was going all over the floor.  Today, Mike and I went over there, by car this time. Mike climbed under the sink to have a look…

He spent a few minutes jiggling out the perished part…

Yip, that’s the perished part…ugh…probably about 50 years old.

I was tasked with cleaning it up while Mike went to buy silicone. He returned, made sure it was thoroughly dry and put it back in place…giving it a good dose of silicone. Sent a message to David not to use the sink for 48 hours. Fortunately, it’s in the laundry so isn’t used often.

Job done. David also said the seal of his coffee machine had gone.  He said he had another and sent this pic

Yeah, we’ll try use that!

A useful day. Still not hugely busy work-wise but a comfortable day. I cleaned the kitchen floor.

Julian arrives in a bit.

Nugget from my journey. In Stacey’s first year of life I was a stay at home Mom. It was 1988 and things for Mike were quite stressful at work. He saw that the company wasn’t doing well. Married now with a daughter, he didn’t have only himself to think of. He had spent almost two years back in land surveying, so when a job at the Cape Town City Council came up, he decided to apply. Off to Cape Town for an interview and he was successful. He resigned towards the end of the year and began working for CCC in January 1989. We stayed in Paarl but started looking for a house to buy in Cape Town. Mike would leave every morning at about 6am and get home close to 12 hours later. As Stacey was now 1 and a bit, I also went back to work. I found a job for two days a week at Highlands House, the Jewish Old Age Home in Cape Town. I had wanted to study further, so I enrolled with UNISA for a post-graduate Degree in Nursing Education and Community Health. Not knowing if I would be disciplined enough or have time enough to complete it, I began with one subject. The job at Highlands House was not to nurse the old folk, but rather to attend to the staff’s health needs. It fitted right in with my major aspect of Community Health which was Occupational Health. I worked twice a week on a Wednesday and Friday. The afternoons were very quiet and I had  time to work on my studies.  These two days a week, I would go into town with Mike and he would drop me off at Highlands House at about 7am. There was not so much traffic in those days. We would leave town at about 4-30pm for the return trip.  On the farm there were a few families renting cottages and my neighbour Marianne was available to look after Stacey on those two days. My daughter got one on one attention with Marianne and she loved it.  So 1989 was a big year for us. The Lord provided a new job for Mike, a new job for me and we bought our first home.

Psalm 28:8

The Lord gives His people strength. He is a safe fortress.

These are the days!

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
