Adjustment Day

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day you left to go back home. The delightful smile I received; the warm hugs and beautiful goodbyes will last me to the next time we meet. You have no idea of how much I love you and your family. My heart is full.

This day has been a busy one. As the family left the guests in the Little Lookout also packed up and headed off to the airport. They were super guests and left the place clean and tidy. I did all the linen and then Mike & I got stuck into cleaning. It took about an hour, by which time David was making his way back into it from the Cottage. He can now settle down until the next time he travels.

Once the Little Lookout was clean and the washing was on the line, I could get on with my regular job. I worked for more than 7 hours which has taken me to quite late in the day. I’m now showered and am sitting in my rocking chair with my laptop on my lap watching the wind whip the waves towards the beach. The wind is set to blow quite strongly this evening. Lots of white horses.

Jess and Gerrie also left today. Julian took them to the airport for their evening flight and we are waiting for him to return so we can have supper. I’ve snacked a bit today so a later dinner is not a problem. It’s an exciting time for the family. Jess is pregnant and their little girl is due late next month! I’m going to be a great aunt!ย  Elsie you are going to get a first cousin. We had a really great time together. So it’s been a day of adjustment.

The weekend lies ahead and the busy-ness of life returns with my work and the rental units getting quite busy.

Today was a good day with good things in it. One of them is that my cough is better. I have been coughing for a full month and I’m so grateful to have coughed a little less today. If it does continue, perhaps I will try the cough syrup the latest guests left behind!ย  It’s definitely better though.

Psalm 6:9
The Lord has heard my cry for mercy; the Lord accepts my prayer.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Higgledy Piggledy Farmyard

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day you and I went to the Higgledy Piggledy Farmyard at Imhoff. We had a blast, best seen in the photos…

ย

Elsie you said you loved the rabbits and the chicks the most. And there was the goat that was on the loose in the field in the middle. It was harassing anyone with food and when it came too close to us, you were so brave! You took a deep breath, remained calm and then we just walked away from it!

We had a fabulous day together. ย

This evening we are having another family dinner and then tomorrow everyone starts going home. We’ve had a great time together.

Psalm 5:3
In the morning, Lord, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait expectantly.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Family Visits

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

You are here! You are here! It’s been a grand old day having you and all the family visit.

Jess and Gerrie are also here but weren’t in the room when I took this photo.

We started the day by going to the beach. The water was very cold for this time of the year. I spent 30 minutes swimming and went home feeling like I’d run a marathon! I spent the rest of the morning warming up and working. This afternoon it was family time. You and I Els, had a fabulous time at the beach. You absolutely loved the water. Remember this day:

Afterwards, we went shopping and then home for a family dinner. It was altogether great fun and a day to remember.

I am now finished and am ready for bed!

Psalm 3:3
But You, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Unusual Sights To See

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was a good fishing day in Fish Hoek. There were loads of boats and fishermen out on the bay. This one got out early, as we left for the beach at 7am.

The private fishing boats seem to make a turn at Fish Hoek beach to see if the Trek fishermen are at work. When they see they are not, they leave and go elsewhere. Later on in the morning, the Trek fishermen seemed to get a great catch. I saw loads of people on the beach helping them pull in their nets.

The water was cool but flat. It was also not very clear. I swam mainly towards the lighthouse and back.

In the afternoon, I walked to Fish Hoek to do some shopping.ย I saw some unusual sights. There were a number of men from the City of Cape Town all gathered around the traffic light at Sunny Cove. They said they were changing the traffic light battery. How many COCT workers does it take to change a traffic light battery? 4. One to do the work and 3 to watch.

Then it was over the bridge and onto the cat walk where there were a number of Law Enforcement officers. Two were on the bridge. One was walking towards the bridge when I passed by and the other two were behind a rock scratching in a bush.

From the balcony I also saw some unusual sights. There was a guy with a surf-ski. He was quite a way from the beach, almost in line with Kalk Bay, but instead of being on the surf ski he was in the water. He had the surf-ski attached to him and he was snorkelling or diving. It was the weirdest thing. My attention was drawn to him because I had been watching two navy inspection boats do their rounds. They went slowly past him and I thought they were the reason he had capsized. It was only when I got the telescope and had a closer look that I realised the paddler was actually in the water on his own accord.

I also saw a fishing boat towing a kayak with 2 people in it. The sights to be seen!

And now the clouds have over and rain is imminent.

Elsie! I am so excited about seeing you tomorrow! One more sleep!

My motto for the year: Not every day is a good day, but there is good in every day. My job is to find it & focus on it. Work on my strengths and not focus on my weaknesses.

Hebrews 13:5
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Not Every Day is a Good Day

Monday

Dear Elsie

This is such a good thing to remember. I heard it today and am passing it forward. “Not every day is a good day, but there is good in every day.” Finding that good is a positive thing to do. To try to find the good in every day. If I have to write it down, I’d probably write down, ‘swimming in the sea’ on a lot of the days. That is always good for me. Today I swam – a wonderful 40 minutes in the water. The beach got very busy early on as it’s Tweede Nuwe Jaar. There were lots of people on the beach. As we walked home, we saw a sewerage drain was leaking. That was reported and the beach was closed while it got fixed. People moved up the beach and swam towards the lighthouse, but during the course of the day, the shark siren went off 3 times. The white flag was flying for a considerable period of time.

After 5 hours of work in the morning, we walked to the village to buy a few things. We got to see the beach up close and personal. There are two flags flying. The red one is in front of the life-saver’s hut. A little further on you can just see the white flag with the shark on.

We walked back along the mountainside and looked out for sharks but couldn’t see any.

Such a beautiful day and tomorrow will be equally as good – or perhaps even better as the wind is expected to drop.

Another good thing that happened today is we had another Airbnb booking. We’ve had a few recently, so February is almost full. January still has some gaps.

Work was also good.

Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.

The best is yet to come -we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Welcome 2023

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today is the first day of 2023.

Last night I set my alarm for 11:50pm. We watched from our balcony as midnight came and across the bay dozens of flares lit up the night sky. Also on the Cape Flats, there were fireworks. It took a few minutes and then all went quiet and calm and we went back to bed.

I started today by beginning my journey through the Bible again. I read through the Bible in a year when I was in my teens. I didn’t do that again until 2007, when I went to the Fish Hoek school of the Bible and part of the course was reading the entire Bible in one year. I decided to continue the habit, so each year I read the Bible from cover to cover. The plan takes about 15 minutes each day and enriches my life all year long. It’s so worth it. In 2012, Julian gave me The One Year Bible & this is the one I’ve used almost every year since. I think I broke from this version for one year, but generally it’s my Bible, divided into 365 days. I just read each day’s portions. It’s very simple.

Before we went on holiday, I carefully wrote in a notebook the portions required for each of the 40 days we were away, so I didn’t have to take my Bible along because it’s quite heavy. I then read the Bible on my cell phone or listened to it when at the gym. As a result, I finished it earlier this year. There was more time to read/listen on the ship.

After my reading, we went to the beach. The wind has continued to blow, so instead of doing a long swim, we walked to the end of the beach and back and had a short one. The sea was warm but the waves were like a washing machine. There was a lot of frothy white surf.

We enjoyed a quiet day, resting and thinking about the goals we have for this year. We don’t have big plans, but we do hope to finish the landscaping at our house.

I march into this year with my soul clinging to the Lord …

Psalm 63:8

My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

End of 2022

Saturday

Dear Elsie

Today we had a very quiet day as we enjoyed the last day of 2022. I did something I seldom do – climbed into bed at about 11:30am and slept for an hour. It was wonderful!

We did not go out today at all. It’s super windy and we really didn’t feel like going walking in the wind. So we rested.

This evening, we sat down to a three course meal to bid farewell to 2022.

And while enjoying dinner, we spotted seagulls flying into the wind. This time, I managed to get a photo of one flying into the wind past our balcony.

We reflected back on the highlights of 2022. On the house front, we made progress on the stairs & behind the house, we got the tanks in and had the cottage rewired. Mike enjoyed buying the Ignis and driving it! He also ran the longest distance he has ever run, certainly in adulthood. And of course, the overseas trip was the culmination of a good year. For me, I enjoyed success at work and enjoyed swimming. The holiday was filled with good memories and we will enjoy remembering them in the years ahead.

We hope for good things in 2023.

Psalm 32:8

The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.”

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

“You’re In My Soul”

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day that I had a ‘slack attack!’ I didn’t do much except lie around reading and playing some of the word games I love. I did work for a short time, but there was so little work, it hardly commanded any of my attention. We did go shopping twice. First we drove to the Mall for pots for the cottage. Then this afternoon, we walked to Fish Hoek to buy dinner for tonight. Jess, Gerrie and David are joining us.

I’m reading two books at the moment. I’m not as big a reader as I should be.ย  Julian is a prolific reader, of course. I don’t know anyone who has a better knowledge of books and authors. If I have time to read, there are always books in the rental units to browse through. It was there that I found Robin McGraw’s first book, “Inside my Heart.” It has made for interesting reading. Then Julian gave Mike the first novel of Evelyn Waugh which was published in 1928. Mike absolutely loved it and thought I might too, so I’ve started reading that as well.

Elsie, I know you are a great reader and I hope it continues throughout your life. I am hoping I can get a better balance in 2023, so I work perhaps a little less and read a little more. One thing about Mike is he has the most amazing concentration to read for hours on end. That is something I can’t do. I read for short periods only.

Mike and I were talking this morning – I can’t even remember what we were talking about but he said something so sweet, that I wrote it down so that I would remember it. He said, “You’re in my soul and I can’t get you out.” It made me feel very warm and fuzzy!

The south-easter has started to blow vociferously across the Cape. When it’s blowing at this velocity, it whistles past parts of the house. The seagulls strain to fly. Flapping seems such hard work when they are flying into the wind & that’s the direction most of them take. It’s only occasionally I see one going in the other direction – then they bullet past – no flapping required as the wind barrels them uncontrollably towards the beach. Perhaps, therein lies the reason they fly into the wind. They can control themselves. Sometimes they seem as if they are flying on the spot the wind is so strong! When we were on the ship and we saw sea birds, we knew land was near. It was an amusing moment when we arrived home and I looked out the window and saw seagulls swooping and thought ‘oh…there must be….duh!’ย  It took a few days for us to readjust to the enormous amount of space we have. In the ship cabin everything was so close. I didn’t need to call to Mike. He was always right there. Even if one of us were in the bathroom, conversations could be had.

With New Year on our doorstep, there are new faces also appearing in the neighbourhood. Across the road, a new family has moved in. Next door, plus two doors down is occupied and the blue cottage had a family of 4, heavily laden with mountains of luggage, labour up the 100 steps to their digs for the weekend. I don’t think we will be disturbed by NY parties. The wind should keep everyone inside.

From myย  window…

Good words to take into 2023.

John 16:33
[Jesus said,] “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

Slow Day

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was a slow day. It’s okay to have a slow day. It is rare for me to wake up feeling blugh. I think it was a post-Christmas slump. I had very little energy – probably due to overeating! I didn’t do much in the morning. At lunchtime, I went off to shop, which included getting a new diary for 2023.

I need a page a day and this one has it.

This afternoon has been equally as slow for me, but I am feeling more energetic. It may have something to do with the 3rd cup of coffee I’m now drinking. The caffeine effect is beginning to trickle through my veins. I managed a few hours of work this afternoon. In a short while, I’ll start cooking dinner because the Berettas are coming.

To prove just how slow the day was, the bird bottle only got refilled at 3pm!

The wind has picked up and it looks like we are in for windy days ahead.

The days between Christmas and New Year are important for me – I am now prepared to say goodbye to 2022. It’s been a good year – a lot has happened in it. I’ve worked hard and it ended with that amazing holiday. The new year lies ahead with some possible family changes as David most likely will finally get to China. That’s my expectation so I’ll lap up time spent with him. He’s a good lad….helping Mike change a toilet seat. Much easier for David to get down to the hard to reach places…

Time to get cookin’!

The Lord lives! Praise to my Rock!

God bless you.

Working Day

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today, I worked! I love these kind of working days. They are low key and I can do as much or as little as I like. I worked for an hour and then we went to the beach. The water was flat and calm and the tide was high. I swam from the cat walk to the lighthouse and back. There were a lot of people in the water. It was just wonderful.

After getting home, just before I had breakfast I filled the bird bottle. They have not drunk as quickly as yesterday so there is still sugar water left. I have some photos of the greedy ones, squabbling and fighting to get to drink. ย

After breakfast, I worked for a little while and then we went down to clean the Little Lookout. We have guests who have arrived today.ย  It’s looking nice and spiffy.

ย

Ha! When I see this angle…

I reflect back on when it began its ‘life!’ November 2019…

We are still excited over it and enjoy getting positive feedback from guests. ย  It’s not self-catering – just a room with a shower room with basin and loo. It has a microwave and kettle. It’s spacious and airy and has excellent WIFI and is on our solar system so load shedding isn’t an issue. Once these guests leave, David will be in it until his next travels.

Our next plan is to try to introduce a option to split the cottage into upstairs and downstairs so we can Airbnb both separately. Perhaps that will be a 2023 project.

After the morning work, Jess and Gerrie came for cappuccino this afternoon and we had a nice chat.

Elsie, darling, I’m counting the days until you arrive! This time next week you should be here! Can’t wait to see you!

Another beautiful day in Fish Hoek. Enjoying each day.

Psalm 146:1-2

Praise the Lord! Let all that I am praise the Lord. I will praise the Lord as long as I live.

Living in the Present

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day that was another majestic summers day. By the time we got to the beach around 7:30am, there were already loads of people there. I had a lovely swim and then dried off on the bench before walking home.

We had a restful morning. I took down the bird bottle and emptied out the plain water, replacing it with sugar water. I put it up and then waited. The first bird arrived. He tasted the liquid and was immediately brightened by the exercise. He got stuck in & stayed for a while.

It wasn’t long before the long-tailed youngsters descended in droves.

In the mid-afternoon, we walked to Harbour Bay. It’s such a lovely walk, especially once we got to Glencairn and took the path through the car park.

Then across Glencairn beach…

We did some shopping and then returned. By the time we got back, the bird bottle was empty! I’ve left it that way until tomorrow.

We are creeping towards the new year. 2023 is just a few days away. Today I was reading through Mark Pilgrim’s Instagram feed. He’s a radio presenter who had cancer at a young age. It then went into remission for more than 30 years. In February this year, it returned – stage 4 lung cancer. A horrible diagnosis. He has remained very positive through months of chemo but then his lung collapsed requiring admission to ICU – which turned into a marathon hospital stay – he’s still in hospital and it’s now been almost 2 months. A year ago, it would have been 27 December 2021 and he would have celebrated Christmas and been living and loving his family to the full. In February, his life changed as the cancer returned and his battle began. He has fought bravely, consistently and positively. I hope he is able to get through this and prosper in 2023.

Truth is we don’t know what tomorrow holds, let along next year. Best thing is to enjoy today. Live in the present. I heard a short talk the other day of a strategy to stop thinking of the past (or worrying about the future). The speaker suggested thinking to yourself exactly what you are doing now. eg. I’m sitting at my desk writing on my laptop. Outside the sun is beginning to set. The sky is blue with puffy pink clouds – the sun is shining on them. The sea is still and the mountains in the distance are purple. It’s a calm and relaxing scene. It certainly does bring me to the present & makes me appreciate now. It’s worth trying.

Psalm 118:24

This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Birds All Time Record

Monday

Dear Elsie,

Today was the day the birds finished the bottle of sugar water in less than 6 hours. It was an all time record! I filled the bottle at 6am this morning. Before 12 noon, theyย  had slurped it dry.

So I took the bottle and filled it up with water – no sugar – just plain water! They can quench their thirst with the good stuff until 6am tomorrow morning. They were less than enthusiastic. It’s now 10pm and most of the water is left!

For the rest, we’ve had a good Boxing Day. We went to the beach this morning for a swim among a lot of locals and holiday makers alike. Home for breakfast and a chilled day. We went for a drive, did a little neighbourhood walk and spent time with the family. Julian, Jess, Gerrie and David are all here. You can see from the photos the weather has been amazing. Julian goes back to Johannesburg tomorrow.

This evening we had young Basil from next door visiting. He provided us with some amusing entertainment. Elsie you will love him!

I’m also thinking of my sister Anne today who celebrates her birthday and is now on a flight to Europe!

Psalm 138:1

I give You thanks, O Lord, with all my heart; I will sing Your praises.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Christmas 2022

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Yay! Today was Christmas Day. You, Elsie went to Christmas with Oupa. We missed having you and the family, but we hope that we will all be together next year.

For us I got up early and made some breakfast plates.

We had the lounge doors open and a young Cape long-tail sugar bird came in and got fully stuck.

After I took this photo, it flew crazily around the lounge and it kept flying up and hitting its head on the ceiling! Eventually, it landed on the floor and Mike threw a sheet over it. He gathered it up in the sheet and put it outside.ย  There are so many of these birds at the moment. Dozens of them. I filled the bird bottle up this morning – by 5pm it was empty. I’m leaving it empty til tomorrow morning.

We exchanged gifts and then midmorning enjoyed a walk at Kommetjie Lighthouse.

We cooked a really lovely Christmas meal and enjoyed every moment of it.

This evening we went for a walk and now we are watching Trevor Noah. In half an hour Julian heads to the airport to pick up Gerrie and Jess who are coming for a couple of weeks.

A lovely Christmas Day.

For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Christmas Eve 2022

Saturday

Dear Elsie

Christmas Eve! We began the day by going to the beach. The wind was from the north and was slightly cool. The water was cooler too, but it wasย  nice and clear and there were quite a few people on the beach & in the sea. I swam to the barrel and back and then towards the lighthouse. Then I swam back to the barrel. There were loads of fishing boats. The trek fishermen were out catching lots of fish and there were a number of others trying to get in on the action. I figured that where there are fish there could be bronze whalers, so I stayed towards the cat walk side of the beach.

On our way home, the shark siren sounded, so I was glad to have missed that.

Home and then out for breakfast with Julian.

I had a lovely chat withย  you, young Elsie & your Mom. You are growing so tall and speaking so well! I’m sure you are so excited tonight!

We spent the rest of the day relaxing and I did some preparation for tomorrow.

And now it is a quiet Christmas Eve. We watched an episode of The Office as well as Happy Christmas Mr Bean which is always a laugh.

Lovely stress-free days at the moment.

Luke 2:16-20

[The shepherds] hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby [Jesus], who was lying in the manger. When they had seen Him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed… But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Rising Glow of Happiness!

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day all the guests checked out. Ruth came and cleaned the cottage and the Seaview Apartment. Next guests in are family! I had this rising glow of happiness as I also have so very little work to do. In fact today, I have only worked an hour.

I have a couple of photos to show you. Yesterday evening we went walking on the beach. It was so calm & the tide was very low. There was lots of beach to walk on.

The sunrise today was spectacular.

Again the sea was very calm and there was not much wind. There was also some lovely cloud cover. I decided to do something I haven’t done for ages. I went for a run. When we were on the ship, I ran a bit on the treadmill. This morning I decided to spend 30 minutes heading towards Simon’s Town. When 30 minutes was up, I’d turn around and go home. I wasn’t going to run the whole way. I am a lazy runner – I run down hills and walk up them. I am also very slow. I thought I would get as far as Dixies but to my surprise I still had 5 minutes to go when I got there. I continued and then realised if I ran like the clappers I would get to the Harbour Bay sign in 30 minutes. I took off in a rush and got there in 30 minutes and 2 seconds. My watch shows me when I’m slow and when I’m fast. The blue is slow and the more it changes to orange and red the faster I’m going. It looks like I’m going super slow towards Harbour Bay, but the blue (over the 5) is blocking the truth.

Look at the red!ย  I was puffing and panting!

It’s blue on the return. I lumbered back up the hill very slowly. I tried to get home in 30 minutes but going back up Echo steps was grueling so I didn’t make it. I think I took a few minutes longer. The reason for my uncertainty is that my watch stops when I stop and I stopped on the stairs. I am very unathletic so this is worthy of a medal! Running is not required in my world of exercise. I don’t know why I did!

It’s Christmas weekend & I’m on holiday!

Luke 2:11-14
[An angel of the Lord said,] “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favour rests.”

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.
