Another Leg of our Journey

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Tomorrow I get to see you! I am excited about that. It will be bitter sweet because tomorrow is the day we get together to remember Oupa & how special he was. You can sit on my lap and I will hold you tight.

Today was a busy day for us. Julian went back to Johannesburg. David moved up to his floor.  Courage cleaned the Little Lookout from top to bottom. Brian washed the windows. I made up the bed. The guests arrive tomorrow.  I also did all the laundry, worked and have just come in from doing some shopping.

But the most exciting part of the day was booking another leg of our journey. The family know we are going north on the ship in April.

For many months it has been under discussion about what to do when we arrive in Italy. Julian will join us once we get to Europe.  Mike wants to see snow and mountains. Julian wants to see Florence. We couldn’t quite make the two work. We started looking at another cruise for Julian to see some of the Mediterranean that also has a visit to Florence, but Mike wasn’t wild about seeing a place he has seen before. We asked him what he wanted to see. He said, “I want to see northern Europe.” Within an hour or two of looking we had found an ideal option from Denmark to Norway and back via Germany. 7 nights. And all of us are super excited about it. We found flights from Italy to Denmark that arrive within 10 minutes of a flight from Johannesburg to Denmark, so it worked out really well. I would never have believed in my lifetime I’d get to see Northern Europe.

To get Mike’s Schengen visa we need to fill in the gaps – have accommodation booked in Italy and a flight home from Copenhagen.  Then he should be able to apply.

This evening I am kaput but the good thing is the guests who are coming into the Little Lookout tomorrow came and picked up the key this evening. They can arrive any time they wish tomorrow & I’ll see them on Friday. Saturday they move up to the Seaview Apartment. It’s a busy month on the Airbnb front.

Psalm 3:5
I will lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

Deconstructing Christmas

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day that there was very little wind and so we took off to the beach for a swim. The water was lovely and the beach crowded. Such a holiday vibe – I almost forgot it was a work day for me. This is what greeted us on our way down.

I had a wonderful 30 minute swim. The net was not out, but there were a lot of people in the water, so I followed a couple out towards the barrel. The trek fishermen started rowing out. There have been plenty fish in the sea these last few days and with fish come sharks. While there were 4 great white sharks spotted in various parts of False Bay more than a month ago, it is the Bronze whale sharks that are frequent visitors when the fishermen are at work. Nigel Riley captured this fantastic photo of one near the trek net this morning.Bronze whalers are not known for their aggression, but I still wouldn’t want to encounter one. My 30 minute swim was happily concluded before the shark arrived. We enjoyed a few minutes of soaking up the sun.   It got busy pretty quickly.

We came home and threw open the doors and enjoyed the summer weather with the relief of not much wind. I did a couple of loads of washing and then this afternoon I deconstructed Christmas.

Mike made two trips to the garage and put them on the mezzanine in the garage. I am writing this hoping that I will remember later this year when I look for them again. We will say, ‘where did we put the Christmas decorations?’ and scratch our heads and rub our chins and offer suggestions. Eventually, one of us will say, “I’m sure they are in the garage”. Ha! I’ve had another idea…

That will help.

The day ended on the balcony. Julian and I watched a couple of international planes pass overhead. If you can see it this one is Eidelweiss Air heading to Zurich. A beautiful evening.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

The 2024 Journey Has Begun

Monday

Dear Elsie

Today is the first day of 2024. I would have loved to have gone to the beach but the wind was strong and the swell was high and I decided to forgo the pleasure. I went to bed after midnight last night, staying up to see the new year in. There were a lot of fireworks across the bay – mainly over the Cape Flats and they went on for about 10 minutes. I fell asleep right after that, but still woke up around 5am. I let the cats out, cleaned out their litter tray and made coffee. The 2024 Journey has begun….

It’s just been such a blessing reading through the Bible each year. It sustains me every single day. My goal is to read through the Bible in a year every year until I physically can’t. I started in 2007.

We had a restful morning. I finished puzzle number 3.

I also worked for an hour to clean some of the inboxes ahead of tomorrow.

Later in the afternoon, we decided to braai. We very seldom braai.

It was grand! For dessert, I found a really easy berry pavlova recipe. It’s just so quick. 1 cup self raising flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Whisk well. Liberally grease an oven proof dish and pour in the batter. Then spread about 600g of mixed berries over the top. I got a kg of frozen mixed berries  and used just over half the bag. Into the oven for about 45 minutes at 180c or until the crust is brown. It’s great with ice cream.

Today David went for a drive. He has not been out for more than 2 months.

Happy New Year!

Maybe this year, I’ll put in a Bible verse from my daily reading.

Matthew 1:23
“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a Son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

God will be with us each day of the year & this year there are 366 as it’s a leap year.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

Beautiful Tokai Forest

Sunday (sorry I forgot to publish this yesterday)

Dear Elsie

Today is the last day of 2023. Julian and I went to Tokai Forest which is looking beautiful.

It was shady and quite protected from the wind. There were not a lot of people around but some had come down for a picnic which was an ideal activity for the last day of 2023.

Mike meanwhile, went for a 6km run! By the time we got home, he had too and was feeling tired but good.

We had a roast dinner and now the family are up here for a coffee. My intention for tonight is to sleep until just before midnight and then get up to stand on the balcony and quietly see 2024 arrive.

Goodbye 2023.

I’m grateful that whatever 2024 holds, God is with us. The last day of the year – the last verse of the Bible:

Revelation 22:21
The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx

Kids for Company

Saturday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I had you for company for almost 2 hours! I didn’t  realise our video call was that long. It went by so fast. It’s such fun having you for company. I look forward to seeing you soon. You have also been at Oupa’s house watering his plants.

The other company I had today was 10 month old Lizzie. Such a cutie pie. She came up with Jess and Gerrie. Capturing these moments is important because the days pass by so quickly. I’m glad I’ve got my simple daily account of what’s happening in my small world.

She’s certainly got some rhythm.

Two other dominant activities at our home at the moment. Many (many) chess conversations… David coaching Mike.

And puzzling over the puzzle which was quickly completed.

I’ve started another one which I think will be slightly harder.

The penultimate day of the year. Quiet days with windy weather and no swimming.

Isaiah 55:8-9
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Super Rest

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I had a super rest. There was only a couple of things I did. We went to the beach where, for the first time this week, the shark net was deployed so I was able to swim to the barrel and back a couple of times. The tide was coming in and the wind was fresh so swimming out was hard work but coming in was a breeze.

I think it may be the last swim until Tuesday. A strong south-easter is expected over the weekend.

I just love the holidays! Today I had nothing on my to-do list, so I had the opportunity to do some more puzzle. Coming along nicely…

The other thing I did today was clean Mike’s study. It gets super dusty with the window open & some of Raiku’s catches have been unceremoniously dumped on the carpet. Mike was out. Julian helped me take the carpet out and I gave it a bit of a clean. Raiku has not caught anything (that we have seen) over the last 2 days, so maybe he bit off more than he could chew last time.

Mike groomed the cats. Trying to get the extra fur off them.

David has had a couple of good days. We take one day at a time. He is doing a lot of resting and that helps.

Isaiah 54:10
Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

New Guests & New Puzzle

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we went to the beach for a little swim. It was windy so we didn’t stay long. The beach was not as crowded as yesterday. Yesterday, all the holiday makes descended on the beach early.

Meanwhile, 10 years ago, we had spent Christmas in the Drakensberg. I posted this to Facebook.

Ten years ago!

Today we put the finishing touches to the Seaview Apartment and welcomed the next guests. And I got to start one of Stacey’s puzzles.

It’s a Venice Market. I’m really enjoying doing this one. It’s great to have the time to do this. Back to work on Tuesday.

The cats have been doing battle this evening. One of the entertaining and on going confusing manoevres they both practice regularly is kicking each other in the head! It means pinning the other down and using their hind legs to pound the other’s head. This continues until eventually the recipient is able to get out of the grasp. Claw’d trying to get the a good grip.

They are so entertaining. Raiku is by far the most work. Yesterday he got a bird and then later was violently ill, so apart from finding an abundance of feathers in the study,  I had another mess to clean up. He also is the 3.30am meowing culprit. Initially we shut them in the study for the  night, but now we allow them to sleep on my rocking chair. At 3.30am, Raiku jumps off the rocking chair and sits in the lounge at which point he begins to meow piteously and sufficiently to drag me out of my slumber. Ignoring him, I get up, pick up a very dozy Claw’d who is still on the rocking chair and march down the passage to the study. Raiku runs enthusiastically to the study, jumps up on the bed and the two of them happily settle down again. Maybe, I need to shut them in there for the night again to break the 3.30am wake up call.

Back to Isaiah. The Gospel in the OT.

Isaiah 53:6
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Oupa

Wednesday

Dear Elsie,

Today was the day Oupa quietly slipped away from this life and entered eternity. He’s no longer in pain. No suffering. His broken body has been replaced with a new one and he is at peace – in heaven – with Jesus and all those who have gone before. He died during the early hours of the morning while you were still asleep. This is a hard time for your parents who have been exemplary in their treatment of your Oupa. It’s been a very tough journey. It was only 2 months ago today that we sat with him at Grandparent’s Day. We will miss him.

Our thoughts have very much been in Swellendam today. We are so grateful that Oupa made it through Christmas and passed away on a working day so everything was able to be sorted. It was also fortuitous that he was able to be collected before you woke up Elsie.  God was gracious in His timing. Also we are grateful that he didn’t linger & that he was at peace before he died. He knew where he was going. This gives us peace as well.

When I end each day’s blog with ‘we are only passing through’ it is for this eventuality. Ron has passed. He’s gone to our eternal home – the one that we wait for. We live but a moment in this world compared to all eternity that lies ahead. We live in a broken world, but when we leave this earthly body and are taken up to heaven, it’s a new life – an eternal life – one that we cannot imagine. One day  you may read these words and the writer of them will be in that place – eternal life – above the sun – where for us everything is new. While those left behind mourn Oupa’s passing, he does not. He is rejoicing. He is complete. He is healed and whole and his true life if just beginning. Here on earth, we cling to what we know. That’s why it’s so hard to let go – to embrace death – to not get sad when someone passes away. This is all we know. But I believe what we are waiting for is beyond what we can imagine. The best is yet to come.

I love you my family. We are praying for you.

Windy Boxing Day

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day the wind blew hard and strong and long. All day long it churned up the waves and white horses galloped towards the beach.

The wind is expected to abate overnight. We had a very restful day. I got dressed to go for a drive with Julian in the afternoon. We drove down to Simon’s Town and around past Cape Point, back over Red Hill. Evidence of the fire very clear. Down by Miller’s Point, it jumped the road and threatened the restaurant and camp site. No damage appeared to have been done and we didn’t see any evidence of houses burnt. The fire services are still around keeping an eye on hot spots. We did some shopping on the way home.

I clicked somewhere on my cell phone today and found myself with a variety of unexpected photo options, including a crash helmet…

and my personal favourite…Helga the cat.

Turns out I was on Instagram. There were other options.

Thinking of Anne today as she celebrates her birthday. Hope you have had a fab day today Annie.

And that’s the wrap for a quiet Boxing Day 2023.

Isaiah 53:5
But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.

God bless you.

Christmas 2023

Monday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we celebrated Christmas day in Fish Hoek. We had Julian, David, Jess, Gerry, little Lizzie,  Minette, Jen, Grandpa and I. We missed you so much but know there will be many Christmas days to come. Oupa is with you and he is gravely ill. His life hangs by a thread. It cannot be long now and this makes it a very difficult Christmas for your family. We are praying for you and thinking of you all the time. It was good to speak to you and see some of the gifts you received.

For us the day started gently – coffee & then mince pies. David came up. Julian came down. Later just after midday the rest of the family arrived, presents were exchanged.

Then we had an expansive Christmas lunch. No chance of being outside. The wind was howling. No wonder Johannesburg is having rain.

After lunch, smoke was seen over the mountain so the fire services jumped into action and a helicopter water bombed it out. That was effective and it was soon out. The helicopter picked up water from off Fish Hoek so that was interesting to watch. Then, the Christmas puzzle got completed. Jess got to put in the last piece.

We had a late afternoon rest.  Then Julian and Gerrie went for a walk. David came up again and we are about to watch some TV.

Grateful for the gift of Christmas.

Christmas Eve 2023

Sunday

Dear Elsie,

Today was the day we prepared for Christmas. So did you. Oupa was chipper this morning and so you got to decorate a Christmas tree in his bedroom. You did a fabulous job and I’m sure it has made him very happy.

We are praying for you all.

Meanwhile, back in Cape Town, we have enjoyed getting to know Lizzie. Here she is with Grandpa.

And on the rocking chair with me…

On the balcony. 10 months of cuteness…

Such a joy.

We had a light dinner this evening & now the family have left to go for walks and to see the Christmas lights.

Meantime, the cats were out and it was dark. I went to lure them in with snacks. We got Raiku in but Claw’d led me a merry dance. Eventually, I had to go find him and drag him back inside. While he was delinquent this evening, it was Raiku who was a disgrace earlier in the day. He caught and devoured an entire mouse that upset his tummy and he promptly came back inside to throw it up. I was out. When I got in, Mike was at the backend of the cleanup. Gross.

This Christmas is unexpected for our family. A year ago, we could never have predicted where we would all be today. We would loved to have had Adrian, Stacey, Elsie and Oupa Ron with us and a back-to-normal David. Elsie, you were going to meet your cousin Lizzie, but that will be another time. We will celebrate with the family who are here today. Despite different circumstances, the message of Christmas stays the same. We celebrate the coming to earth of Jesus. Our hope is in Him.

“I have put my words in your mouth and covered you with the shadow of my hand—”

Saturday Before Christmas 2023

Dear Elsie

Today you and I had a good chat. You are so helpful in keeping me company while doing chores. We did a lot. You watched while I filled up the birds’ sugar water. Today I was careful not to put in so much sugar. I halve the amount so hopefully they won’t get through it as much. We found Raiku sitting on the balcony watching the birds drink the water. He was so interested but also very aware the birds are completely out of reach. You were so quiet while we waited for the birds – so as not to scare them away. Raiku loves to watch them. You also watched as I cleaned the balustrade on the balcony and as I wrapped Grandpa’s Christmas present.   I love chatting to you.

Earlier this morning, we had gone to the beach. The wind was not too bad and I had a lovely swim.

As did many others…

On the way home, a train pulled into Sunny Cove station. I waved at the train driver and he hooted a hello in reply.

The rest of the day was spent cleaning which bought me a great deal of satisfaction. The fire was flaring up in a few spots and so the helicopters were still water bombing the areas. The smell of smoke has gone and generally everything has died down. Unfortunately, the wind has not and a strong south-easter is due all through the long weekend. Let’s hope there are no more fires.

Today we rearranged the lounge and set up the table to accommodate the 8 of us.

This evening everyone came up for dinner and Claw’d and Raiku were introduced to Lizzie who is almost 10 months old. Claw’d was absolutely petrified. Never before has he seen a little human who is given to squawking and crawling enthusiastically after him. He did not know what to make of her! He will soon get used to her.

Time to wrap up for the day.

Isaiah 51:12
“I, even I, am He who comforts you.”

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Fire and Fumes

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day the fire came very close to our house. There are a certain exceptional set of circumstances that would cause the mountainside behind our house to burn and today one of them nearly happened. For fire to get to our house, there are two worst case scenarios. The first is if someone lit a fire the Fish Hoek side of the quarry while there was a south-easter. That would bring fire to behind  us. Alternatively, if there is a fire on Fish Hoek mountain, Glencairn side (which there was today), it has to burn over Elsie’s Peak (which it did) and then the wind has to turn to a northerly wind causing it to blow back down the mountain to behind us. Today all that happened, including the wind coming from the north and at 1pm, it looked like it was going to breech the ridge and head our way….

The wind started turning to the south and since then it has not been as much of a threat to us, but rather to the houses on the other side of the mountain – not far away – only about 1km away. This was at 3pm.

To prevent damage to property a couple of water bombers were sent to Fish Hoek beach to get water. This is a rare sight.

Overhead…

And dropping the water…

There was also a fixed wing plane of which local Peter Kemp got a fabulous photo…

We are so blessed to have such expertise. The fire further down the peninsula is still raging so the city’s resources are stretched to the limit. Hopefully, they will be able to get them under control before nightfall. The water bombing certainly helps.

This drama detracted from two other things that happened today. With the fire, someone suggest putting water out for the birds. I haven’t had my water bottle out for more than 6 months. Now the cats are settled & used to seeing birds around – pigeons often land on the balcony – I thought it would be okay to put the water bottle back. It was maybe 2 minutes before the birds found it. The cats now have big screen entertainment of moving birds. Raiku…

Claw’d watching from bed!

They haven’t gone outside to watch.

And the beach this morning was delicious. The water temperature was in the 20s. Summer holidays for sure!

The guests in the cottage left. Ruth cleaned the cottage and then Ruth, Courage and Brian ended work for the year.  We are waiting for Gerrie, Jess, Baby Lizzie, Minette and Jen to arrive in the next hour or two, having driven down from Johannesburg. They seem to have made good time.

And finally, our thoughts are also very much in Swellendam with you and your family, Elsie,  where you are looking after Oupa. He does not have much time left before he sheds his broken body and gets a new eternal one. I am praying the end will come gently.  This is what it’s all about.  This earthly life is temporary.

Isaiah 51:11
Those the Lord has rescued will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Another Fire!

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day Oupa moved into your home. It is wonderful that you are able to be there to keep him company and celebrate Christmas with him. I’m so glad your parents are there to be able to look after him. We are praying for him and for you all.

Today was the day another fire broke out on the hill over the mountain from us. The wind is only expected to drop overnight but right now it is blowing gales and it has caused the fire to swoop down the mountain towards Stonehaven Estate.  We went for a drive when we heard about it to find out exactly where it was. It’s at the Sun Valley side of Fish Hoek mountain – it started on the Glencairn side and has swept along the ridge.

The wind is so strong, it’s really blown it into an inferno.

My thoughts are with all the residents both at Stonehurst and in the Evergreen Retirement Village. The fire services have now closed Glencairn Expressway and are doing all they can to prevent damage to property. There is news that Stonehurst may need to be evacuated. This has just been posted coming from the Capri Neighbourhood Watch group.

It’s going to be a long night. The wind is due to drop by morning. These fires are so unpredictable. With the wind, sparks can fly far and wide.

Isaiah 51:6
Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath; the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants die like flies. But my salvation will last forever, my righteousness will never fail.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Cat Showdown

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day the cats had a showdown. They went for each other with lots of hitting, biting & kicking. They are so entertaining to watch and I can’t wait for you to see them. When we are sitting in the lounge, we often have ring-side seats. The threatening stare…

Pounce and subdue

The Raiku retreat…

But an hour or two later, all is forgot…

Meanwhile, Mike and Courage were working on a different project.  The trestle table for Christmas day. Taking it onto the balcony..

Levelling the feet.

Tada….

Pity the wind is predicted to howl on Christmas Day – it’s most unlikely we will have it out on the balcony, but it looks good there today.

The fire in Simon’s Town was bought under control in the early hours. This was last night…someone posted it from Glencairn….

Today we heard it had flared up and was burning toward Rocklands. The helicopters have been at it all day. This is from the end of our road.

It’s very smoky outside. Hopefully, no property is damaged. I heard it jumped the main road towards the coast. I’m hoping to find out more.

Isaiah 50:10
Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant?
Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.
