We Heard a Big Bang

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I woke up with a tummy ache and it hung around until eventually I took some Buscopan. That worked like a charm and now I’m better, albeit I feel slightly queasy. Note to self: no more liquorice – it’s like honey in my mouth and poison in my stomach.

This afternoon while we were just chilling, there was suddenly an enormous bang. David had gone for a drive. We thought it came from the workshop, so Mike and Courage went to investigate. All they found that could possibly have been the cause was a rock had rolled down. They suspected that when it hit something it reverberated up and caused the significant bang.

Then David came home from his outing. He rested on our floor and then went up to the top and immediately called down. I thought that something really bad had happened – like the doors had fallen out. The ceiling boards of Julian’s balcony had collapsed. When last here, Julian had said they were sagging, but the maintenance team have a way of leaving these things until Julian next comes and doing it on that day, so it was going to be dealt with next Wednesday. But, it didn’t last. It all came tumbling down, much to Mike’s chagrin.

Courage was hastily called to secure what was left. I took photos and sent them to Werner. Werner is keen to please because he will soon start building on a plot nearby (I referred the owner to him!), so he’s coming on Monday to look. I sent him the measurements. It’s 3.6m x 1.2m so once we have that, it can be fitted and Courage can do the painting. By the time Courage left at 4.30pm, all was forgot. Mike had got over it. Courage had apologised.

Despite my tummy grumbles, I still worked 7 hours.

Today, one year ago, David’s body broke. It’s been a year  he has been unwell. Yesterday we said nothing. It was 52 weeks. Today we have been as quiet as church mice. I dare not raise it. Why bring up the pain of one long year of struggle. One thing I know for sure – God knows. He’s got this. He has David’s best interest in mind. We can’t see it. It was terrible at first. He thought he was having a heart attack. Then he went through all the stages of grief – denial, anger,  bargaining, depression & finally acceptance. We all have struggled with these emotions. I’ve been face down on the bathroom floor praying for my son (and my daughter), wetting the mat with my tears.  But now, there is acceptance. We constantly pray, but we also live  knowing God’s plan is best. He has this. And we will trust Him. In the meantime, life goes on for him one slow day at a time. I take strength from the Bible. Every day it feeds me.

Psalm 35:9
Then my soul will rejoice in the Lord and delight in His salvation.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Reinforcing the Wall

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day the sun rose casting a very red hue across the sky. Red sky in the morning, shepherd’s warning.

I went down to the beach for a swim and towards the end, it rained. It’s always lovely swimming in the rain on a warm summery day. The water was warm, the air temperature was  fine – there was just a little rain.  The rain had stopped by the time I got out. It was lovely. Home to make egg and bacon for breakfast. David moved upstairs for the week. Ruth came to clean and Mike and Courage got stuck into reinforcing a wall. After all the rain last winter, a crack began to appear…

Mike had the engineer check it. He laughed. He didn’t think it was anything significant. But it does go all the way down the wall.

Mike decided to reinforce it. He made boxing for the cement..

And today he and Courage made cement and did the pour…

It now shouldn’t get worse…

So that was a big thing achieved.  Courage went home with a spring in his step. Mike had a lie down! Courage said Mike is the strongest madala he knows!

A good day all round, especially as I finally think SARs has my new bank details. I had to jump through a number of hoops. I had to do that whole thing of taking a photo of myself with my ID book & writing their verification number on it with today’s date. I had to get a bank letter and then email the whole lot plus my ID and proof of address to get the change done. Hope for the best.

Psalm 34:19
A righteous man may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Silky Water

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day the water was like silk. It’s strange to think water can be silky but it was so still, warm and clear – it was gentle against my skin. It made it hard to get out.  I spent 44 minutes in the water & swam 2km.

Pristine beach…

And the sunrise wasn’t half bad either.

Home for breakfast and then work, work, work.

A glorious day.  February has seen amazing weather this year. It’s the 13th and I’ve swum 10 times.  Talking of the 13th, it means we’ve had the cats for 7 months. They are a blessing and they don’t even know it. Claw’d is the lazy one. I throw snack pellets at him and before he has time to lift his sluggish head and lean forward to eat it, Raiku has blitzed in from meters away and grabbed it away from him. Claw’d just looks on sleepily. Raiku is solid – all lithe muscle. He comes in through the window and you hear ‘donk donk’ as he jumps down onto plastic storage tubs – then it’s meow, meow, meow. Claw’d quietly lets himself in and silently plods across the floor. Suddenly he’s there. But at times, Claw’d is all awake and on guard. He will initiate a fight with Raiku and wrestle him with all his round little might. Claw’d will chatter at the pigeons, with evil intent to be sure. But it’s a lost cause – the door is closed. The pigeon is safe.

But it’s always fun to try. They have been a blessing to be sure. Sometimes when I take David coffee in the morning, Claw’d will come down with me and I’ll deliver cat and cappuccino. They have bought joy to our hearts. Indeed, whatever did I write about before 13th July 2023? 7 cat-filled months – they have settled well, hardly use the litter tray these days, have free run of the mountainside, and come in soon after 9pm to be kept safe from the caracals.

I hear the notifications for my blog are no longer going out. I don’t know why. Suddenly they stopped. I think it must be a WordPress thing.

End of Tuesday! A little bit of puzzle progress. Slowly slowly but I am enjoying it. It’s not as hard as the bougainvillea!

Psalm 34:1
I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Big Fire in Kalk Bay

Monday

Dear Elsie

This afternoon, suddenly, a huge fire flared up in Kalk Bay – it was on Trappieskop which is the path that leads from Kalk Bay over a little saddle to Clovelly. As the wind was blowing form the north, the fire raged rapidly down the mountain towards Kalk Bay causing a massive billow of smoke.

Someone called Erica took a photo from the Kalk Bay side…

Soon the valley was alive with sirens and the buzz of overhead helicopters as three of them doused the flames with sea water.  The flames were enormous as other photos from social media showed.

The helicopters got the fire under control and then managed to extinguish it completely. First news was that 3 homes were razed. Then came the news it was only 1 but two were damaged. Under final inspection, we found out that one derelict building was burned and one house was damaged.  This was the house that had damage to its upstairs.

So it was a dramatic afternoon. The fire started and spread so quickly, it was scary. The fire services are still on Boyes Drive, keeping an eye out for any flare ups.

Apart from that, it was a beautiful summers day. We swam this morning. Julian left. David spent the day in. He came up for dinner and we got more insight into his ability/inability. How many steps do you walk a day?  It’s a stretch for David to walk 3000 steps a day. That’s a huge day of walking for him and after it he would need to take a complete break for a number of days. The average American only walks 3000-4000 steps a day, so the lower end of that is David’s goal. He would like to be able to walk 3000 steps every day, but at the moment, it’s maybe that once or at a push, twice a week. That’s Long Covid for you.

Psalm 33:20
We wait in hope for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Starlings & Stained Glass

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day that began with a message from the guests – there were starlings getting inside the roof. Starlings are all over our area and I regularly see them looking for places to nest. They managed to squeeze into a gap behind the eves, so we had to go down and block it up. No Courage today, so guess who had to climb the ladder and do the fix…

There were a few spots the birds could get in..

If our quick fix doesn’t work, tomorrow Courage will do a better job tomorrow.

And then today, I packed up the Italy puzzle – I didn’t finish it but I was finished with it. It was time to move on. So I’ve got this one and I’m excited about it. With proper sorting, I think it will be easier than Italy.

I’ve done the frame and now it’s onto sorting pieces. My strategy with this is to almost divide it into piles –  pink or stain glass,  yellow with blue,  yellow with white and anything red, yellow and orange. Then I’m also setting aside the pieces from the bottom circle and the pieces that make up the faces. Once I’ve done that, the assembly should go pretty fast. We’ll see.

Weekend done and a grand new week begins.

Psalm 33:7
He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Birthday Party with a Few Twists

Saturday

Dear Elsie

I am so glad we got to chat today and you got to see the cats.  You would have loved what I did today. I went a birthday party arranged by an almost 10 year old. Melody and her cousins arranged a birthday party for her Granny and I went along for the fun. I even had my face painted!

And me with the artist…

Melody gave me a smiley face and a red heart!

We also had pass the parcel, musical statues and hit the pot! Great fun. A party to remember.

When I got home, David had come up to visit and said he was feeling rested enough to go out for dinner so we went to Sav Cafe for ribs. They took a long time to come, but were worth it in the end. Julian & David enjoyed a beer…

Just to clarify – twas an alcohol free beer.

As far as puzzles go, I have got quite far through the Italian one and am slowly making progress through the bougainvillea but I am still in two minds as to whether I should finish. Today I got one from John and Avril – which is for Living Hope second hand shop, but they need to know if there are any pieces missing. At first glance it looks really hard but I spent a few minutes sorting the frame and now I’m excited to get going on it. I’ll post a photo when I start. This is Italy so far.

A happy Saturday.

Psalm 32:7
You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Best Times on the Day

Friday

Dear Elsie

I have some absolute best times of the day. This is one of them..

Sunrise – I need to be up early for them, & every time I am, it is so worth it. It’s the time of the day when I do my Bible reading and that’s also a very meaningful time. Then it’s onto my word game. There’s a new word game called Blossom where you are given 7 letters and need to find the 12 longest words you can make of those 7 even if you duplicate. That goes down right after my Bible reading and I absolutely love it.

After that I either start work or we get ready for the beach. Today, as we were planning on going to the beach, it began to rain, so we decided to hold off going and I started work.

Breakfast is a favourite time of the day. Pawpaw, full cream yoghurt, a dash of cream, honey and my breakfast dessert is ready!

Today at lunchtime I took myself off to the beach on my own. It was very quiet. I left my towel next to two young guys on the cat walk. They looked well dressed but you never know. I didn’t engage with them at all. I just took my shoes off, put my sunglasses in my shoes, took off my hat, put my towel over the whole lot and went down the little step from the cat walk to the sea. And I swam. Another favourite time of the day. The water was lovely and warm. The wind had picked up and there was quite a ripple. It churned up the sand in the sea and underwater visibility wasn’t that good. I swam out to the barrel and back a few times. In the end I did about 1.5km and after 40minutes or so I headed back to the cat walk. There I found the two guys on their feet about to leave, but not comfortable to, as my towel was still there. I thanked them for watching out for my few things and off they went.

I came home and had a cold shower – as cold as cold can be through hot pipes. The cold shower relieves the itch caused by my bites. I didn’t get any more today and the ones I have are slowly subsiding.

Mid-afternoon, I nipped out to do some shopping, including fresh antihistamines. I also re-ordered

And of course, one of the best times of the day are at its end, when I climb into bed and have about an hour before I put my head on the pillow.

Best times of the day!

Best moments – I always enjoy the cat’s antics. Claw’d insists on cleaning Raiku. Claw’d: I will clean  you…..

…but inevitably it ends in a fight…

And let me not forget today is Avril’s birthday. Happy birthday Avril! 🤩

Psalm 31:22
In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from your sight!” Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

The Itchiest of Days

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was the itchiest of days. The hundred tiny bites from yesterday’s swim roared into life a couple of hours after my morning swim. Today’s swim itself was great. The water was cold and very soothing. But after I got home and started working, the itchiness increased with the heat of the day. I ended up taking another (expired) pill but this time, I think it truly had expired as it had no effect at all. I’ll take the last one later and hope for the best.  Yoh! I’ve never had so many bites from swimming at Fish Hoek before. I must have swum through a shoal and they got into my swimming costume and couldn’t get out. They just started stinging and they’ve certainly left their mark! At least I didn’t get more this morning! I googled them.

Pica pica = itchy-itchy for sure! They should only last 4 days. Hopefully tomorrow will start to improve.

After almost 8 hours of work, I walked to the end of Fish Hoek beach with Julian. That was a good distraction.

Such a beautiful day and it’s expected to continue tomorrow.

Psalm 31:14-15
But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Ramble on the Mountain

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I got quite a lot packed in. I had an appointment in the morning followed by a quick shop. I got home in time for an 11am work meeting. I worked until just after 2pm and then went to the beach, where I spent about an hour in the water. Down side: I got bitten. A bazillion little water miggies. I came home covered with burning bites. I lathered Phenergan ointment all over them. Then I dug out an antihistamine (that expired in 2013) and took that. It soon worked and relieved the intense itching.

I can’t believe this worked so well!

I ended the afternoon by going on a mountain ramble with Julian. There has been some chain saw noise and we decided to go to look. First, looking at gabion baskets.

Then across the mountain watching out for snakes while enjoying the beautiful views…

There is some plot clearing at the start of what should be Gleneagles Rd but we doubt it’s related to the road. Time will tell.

Home, dinner and now Chess is being watched.

Matthew 25:13
Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

The Secret to Longevity

Tuesday

Dear Elsie,

I’ve been thinking about the secret to longevity. Sometimes you see stories in the press about old people who are 103 and they have an inkling into the secret to their longevity. They speak about how they were raised,  how happy they were, how they ate and how they exercised. I have a couple of opinions on the topic. To start with the secret to longevity lies in God’s hands. He knows the day of our birth and the day of our death and even if we live perfect lives, there are no guarantees as to how long we get to walk this earth. Some people are super healthy, yet die young. Others are super unhealthy yet the make old bones! So the true secret to longevity only God knows.

What I believe is the way to age  healthily is to be sensible in each area of life.  Eat when hungry and stop when full. Don’t go overboard. Eat a balanced nutritious diet.  Exercise moderately. It’s not a sprint, it’s more a marathon. I really have begun to learn I don’t have to go far or fast – I just need to keep moving. We watched NYAD. What an account! I don’t have to swim across the bay to be healthy. Just 30-40 minutes at Fish Hoek will suffice. I don’t need to walk from Cape Town to Cairo – just my 70000 steps a week will do. I don’t even have to run – walking is fine.  Keep busy but not too busy to be stressed. Have friends but only the ones that contribute to your life and don’t contaminate it. Be happy!

Now you know some of the things I’m thinking when I’m swimming. And the swim today was idyllic. It was quite cloudy but the sea was flat with the north wind and it was easy swimming.

I spent some time today sorting documents.

I got a some important things sorted. But the big event of the day was Mike’s passport came back from the Italian visa department.  Last time he literally was given a visa for 6 months so this time we motivated for longer. And we got it! 5 years! So excited! Thank you Lord!

It makes such a difference not having to reapply. So grateful!

Psalm 30:5
For his anger lasts only a moment, but His favour lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

A Different Monday

Monday

Dear Elsie

Today was a different Monday. Mondays are always very busy for me because I’ve got all the email from the weekend to catch up on. Monday, I get stuck in and it’s often an 8-hour working day. I knew today was going to be busy so I worked for over an hour last night, which was very helpful. It meant this morning I could go to support my friend Bev after the loss of her husband Ronnie.

As we get older we are seeing more of our age group go to heaven. It’s not our parents’ generation who are passing now – it’s ours! I am so grateful for the hope we have as Bible believing Christians in knowing where we go when we die. It gives us peace that our goodbyes are not forever.

So, I went to the start of the service and stayed until just after 11am – then I needed to get home for my 11.30am weekly work meeting.

I worked until just after 2pm, when I got into my swimming costume and headed for the beach because Ingrid and Jo were planning on an afternoon swim at 2.30pm. I had a wonderful hour long swim and then walked home all salty!

Dinner is done and now it’s time for a quiet evening.

Whenever I go swimming, I try recall what I have read in my morning Bible reading. My brain is so quick to forget, so it’s always good for me to reopen my Bible at this time of the day and find a verse from it for my Blog. There is always treasure.

Psalm 29:10-11
The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord is enthroned as King forever. The Lord gives strength to His people; the Lord blesses His people with peace.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

New Guests Day

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today was new guests day. The lovely Swedish couple who have been with us for a while,  packed up all their belongings and filled their car to the brim. By 9am, they were on their way. Ruth came at 10am. I had been to the beach for a swim. Today, I swam 2km, came home, had breakfast and then spent the next few hours helping Ruth pull the cottage back up to scratch.

I went up and down the stairs to get things & by 1.30pm, we were ready. The guests arrived a few hours later and are settling in.

The cats curious about the events sat under the tree in the shade watching…

The other moving day was for our neighbours who are now settled across the road as the owners of their rented home arrived from Germany. While I was welcoming our young (German) guest to the cottage, Guenter and Marion arrived, so I introduced them, expecting them to speak German, but they didn’t – they spoke English. Our guest’s name is Julian so it’s easy to remember! His English is exceptional.  He and his (South African) girlfriend are here until 12th March. He was very forward thinking as he made this booking 8 months ago. Clever chap – he got it at a very good price.

The day has been beyond spectacular. February is the hottest month of the year in Cape Town and today was one of those days that shone.

We can’t deny it’s summer.

David says he is feeling slightly better on the Low Dose Naltroxene.

My goal this week is to try and start the process of getting my unabridged birth certificate from Zimbabwe. I have the original hand written one but I need one with both my parents names on it. I don’t know if this is possible, but I’ve emailed a company.

To think both my parents handled this piece of paper. They would have been so happy when they got it. Helga Louise.  Makes me warm and fuzzy.

I’ve gone to pick up my Bible to look up the verse I read this morning and put it here. It’s easy to remember – 2024!

Exodus 20:24b
Wherever I cause my Name to be honoured, I will come to you and bless you.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

Life Lessons Through Doing a Puzzle

Saturday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day you and I had a good chat. You have become so verbal and articulate since you started Grade R. You have always had a good vocabulary but now you are really using it. You showed me your ‘cave’ and your flashing light. I showed you Claw’d sleeping. He actually slept in such a funny position today. He had his paws crossed and had one foot standing!

So, I’m pressing on with the puzzle. I gave up on the bougainvillea & learned a couple of lessons applicable to life. 1. Slow down.  This is not a sprint -it’s a marathon, so take your time and enjoy the journey. And 2. If life seems too difficult, try to simplify the process. So that’s what I did with the puzzle.  I slowed down and took a simpler route.

This is the picture…

And now I’m up to here…

I’m leaving the hard parts to last. I’m back to enjoying it instead of finding it a grind, which it was when I was painfully and unsuccessfully fiddling with the purple. There are some benefits to finding places for little pieces of cardboard. 😅 I find it relaxing and a wonderful distraction.

The other thing I did today was walk to Harbour Bay and back. It was pleasantly overcast and breezy so not too hot. There was plenty of activity at Glencairn with both wind and kite surfers enjoying themselves.

A while after I got home, out of nowhere came thunder, a flash or two of lightening and a downpour of rain. The little storm has passed over and now the sun is shining again. Tomorrow is moving day. The guests in the cottage move out and a new couple arrive – this time for more than a month.

Mike is making hamburgers tonight & I’m ready for them.

Psalm 27:13-14
I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heard and wait for the Lord.

Waiting is key. Not easy, but necessary.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx:)

Sea Swells

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I went to the beach at lunchtime. That was something different.  I didn’t take my phone with me because I went alone, but these are the photos Fish Hoek Beach Facebook page posted.

There was quite a lot of swell, which made for a fun swim.

The net was in place so I focused on swimming along-side it, so I could see I was going in a straight line. When I strayed from the net, I ended up being pushed off course.  This was a really enjoyable swim.

I’m not very fast, but at least I’m edging towards doing 2km.

This evening Mike felt as if he was coming down with something so David did not join us for dinner. Not wanting to expose himself to bugs, he chose to stay away. Hopefully Mike will be better tomorrow.

I have a puzzle problem. This Italian one with the bougainvillea is really difficult and I’m contemplating moving on! I think tomorrow I’ll try do some of the houses and if I make progress, I’ll keep going.

And so that’s the week done. I think I’ll call it an early night.

Psalms 27:5
For in the day of trouble He will keep me safe in His dwelling; He will hide me in the shelter of His sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Smoky Sunrise

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day of a very smoky sunrise. There has been a massive fire burning over in Pringle Bay. This was it two days ago…

Pringle Bay residents had to evacuate their homes. This was soon lifted but the fire seemed to flare up last night and the strong wind blew the smoke across the valley. It resulted in a very smoky sunrise.

The air soon cleared and the smoke hasn’t been as noticeable today. I walked to Fish Hoek for some early morning shopping, seeing as it was too windy for a swim – the surf a bit too much of a washing machine for my liking…

I worked 8 hours today. David’s Low Dose Naltrexone arrived so we both started on it. I’ll see if I sleep better. It also came with a free 30 capsule bottle of  mega Vitamin D tablets which was a real score. Recently, I was lamenting that I didn’t ask my doctor for a prescription for them for David – they are the massive 40000iu Vit D pills that you only need to take 1 per week! The ones we buy over the counter are 1000iu.  It was the answer to a prayer I didn’t pray.

David came up for dinner. His blood test results are back. All normal except for his iron. On investigation, anticoagulants can cause iron deficiency and his was quite low, so now he’s on folic acid. Of course being anaemic can make you very tired, so maybe iron supplements will improve his fatigue. Claw’d is very fond of David and always wants to be around him. Here is David stretching with Claw’d waiting for some attention.

Exodus 13:17
When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt”

Sometimes the way God leads is the longer way, but He always has good reason & our best interests at heart.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂
