It was almost a year ago that I posted probably my most negative blog ever.
It all began on my 50th birthday – 5th November 2014, when I put on my hiking boots (which I hadn’t worn for YEARS) and Mike & I went for a 10km mountain hike.
This life is full of cause and effect. If you eat too much, you gain weight. If you eat too little, you get too thin. If you spend too much, you don’t have enough money. If you have an affair, you’ll ruin your family. The list goes on. It also includes, ‘if you wear boots that you haven’t worn for years and then walk 10km in them, you’ll hurt your feet.’
Apart from a seriously strained pair of Achilles tendons, I had also wrecked my knees. A visit to a physio bought bad news. This was for life. I would always struggle with problems relating to my Achilles and my knees. I was told to never run again. It was that news that led me to write the blog on my knees being shot, my feet being shot and concluding I am a Crock!
There is good news!
For the last 12 months, I have tenderly taken care of my feet, nurturing my Achilles tendons by wearing inserts and cup heels. I have stopped deep squats and am no longer running – pounding the pavements, jarring my knees with each footfall.
My knees still have crepitus and from time to time when I do jog, there is a bit of pain the next day, but nothing serious. Occasionally, my Achilles feel slightly swollen or tender, but overall, I’m good to walk. And walk I do. I walk for miles each day and clock up 10 000 steps or more, almost every day. I climb hills and flights of stairs, taking them all in my stride. I’m fit and healthy and happy.
My statement a year ago, thankfully and by God’s grace, was not a prophesy – it was a lie!
I guess we are lured into believing a lot of lies. Negative thinking plagues our minds and poisons our attitudes. It’s best, I conclude to focus on the possibilities and not on the problems.
I still have my boots….
…and I’m not ready to part with them just yet. With winter on our door step, I think I may just pad them up with my inserts and heel cups and do a few short walks in them. They’ve still got plenty of miles in them and once I’ve walked them in, I’m sure I’ll be able to summit that mountain once again, with no ill effects at all. With Mike now retired, we are combining golf and a few mountain hikes as our preferred joint exercise outings.
Isaiah 46:4
Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.
The best is yet to come!
Keep the smile going.
God bless you!
In His Grip,
Helga xx 🙂
