This morning, I woke early and after a short play time with Elsie, I hugged the family goodbye and set off for Cape Town. First I needed fuel, so I got that in Swellendam. Then as I drove towards the freeway, I realised I’d forgotten my rings. I turned back. That delayed me by 15 minutes but I was soon on my way again.
There was not too much traffic. I left super early because it’s the end of the school holidays and I expected more holiday makers returning home to Cape Town. What surprised me was the amount of traffic heading out of Cape Town and back to the Eastern Cape and even Durban. I made good time. Arrived at Caledon for my coffee and then headed for Peregrine Farm Stall where I was going to stop for pies.
Along the Caledon to Peregrine stretch of road, I encountered a very slow-moving delivery truck. It was 100km/hour zone and the truck chugged along at 80km/hour. With all the oncoming traffic, blind rises and solid white lines, I just had to sit behind it and wait for a safe time to overtake. The number of cars built up behind me. Still I was patient. Eventually, there was a stretch which was clear and it was time to go. I put my foot down and overtook.
Bye truck.
Immediately in front of me about 400m up the road, a policeman stepped into the road and there was a traffic stop. If I had stayed behind the flippin’ truck, he would have been pulled over.
I could do nothing but laugh. I just laughed and laughed. You can imagine the policeman’s surprise. I pointed at the van as it sailed by and I explained to him that for miles and miles, I had patiently sat behind that truck. The moment, I could finally overtake, he pulled me over.
“Agh! Ek is jammer,” he said!
He checked my licence disc and I handed him my driver’s licence. He ran my ID though his system and then said, “Everything is in order.”
And off I went.
Of course, I soon caught up with the truck…round two…
I soon overtook him and arrived at Peregrine….Pies are amazing.
Through Somerset West – 5 of the 8 lights were green. Google Maps said Baden-Powell Drive was the quickest route home. I pulled up to the turn off in time to see a massive 16-wheeler articulated truck pass by. In front of me was a Ford 4×4 with registration number 001 CUP EC and the truck was in front of it. Passing Khayelitsha, I could see a fire, but it turned out that it was not serious – was just a small fire on the side of the road….
I drove behind these two for ages, going really slowly, not because of the 16-wheeler but in front of it was a cement mixer. Eventually the truck got to overtake it, followed by the Ford and me. So the three of us went about 80km/hour for a short while, before we came up against a very slow, red Tazz that was pouring black smoke. We soon got around him. Then there was a water tanker – it moved over so overtaking was not difficult. Then there was a blue Tazz (no wonder I remember the 4×4’s number plate – and what is it with Tazzes?!) The articulated truck overtook with enthusiasm so eventually it was again just the three of us. Until Strandfontein turn off. Bye truck, bye 4×4. They both turned off.
Yay!
And so I arrived home a few minutes shy of the 3 hour mark. Mike was playing day two of a golf competition. I messaged everyone to say I was home safe and sound and chilled for a few hours, had the Peregrine pie for lunch and went to gym this afternoon and church this evening.
I’m ready for bed, but Roger Federer is playing John Isner. David is here to watch, so I’ll see if I can hold my eyes open for a little longer.
The end of March and a blessed one it has been.
Hebrews 12:15
See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no ‘root of bitterness’ springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled.
It does take intention to prevent bitterness from springing up. Guard against it.
These are the days.
Keep the smile going.
God bless you.
In His Grip,
Helga xx 🙂
