My Winter Treat – It Took 20 Years, But I’ve Got It!

More than 20 winters ago, Mike & I had an electric blanket which we loved putting on before we went to bed at night. Warming up the sheets was just so wonderful. We’d climb into bed and turn it off and go to sleep. If we woke up in the night and were a little cold, we’d put it on again for a short while. It wasn’t anything like the modern electric blankets of today with dual functioning and three levels of heat. It had just an on/off button on one side only. Mike was on that side, so he operated it. Our love of our cosy electric blanket came to a swift end of one cold winter’s morning, probably in about 1994. Mike had turned it on and was enjoying its warmth when suddenly, the spot where the lead joins the blanket erupted – sparks flew and black smoke puffed out of the wires. Had we not been there, it could quite possibly have burned out house down!

That was the end of our electric blanket. Over interim years, I have, almost probably every year, said, ‘maybe we should get an electric blanket’, and Mike has pounced on it with a determined, “no.” So hot water bottles have been well used during the cold winter months, UNTIL 2015! When I again suggested buying an electric blanket, and Mike didn’t shoot the idea down. I jumped at that and joyfully made the purchase.

Electric blanket instruction manualIt’s been a treat! It cost just over R500, but brings us great comfort every single night! With dual controls and three options of heat, R250 of pleasure each makes it worth it. If you work it out, you’ll find that using it every night for three months works out at about R3 per person per night. Then next year will be free! We only have it on for an hour and then it gets turned off. Keeping it on all night is just too hot.

Follow the safety instructions found in the manual to avoid it becoming a fire hazard. Turn it off when not in use. Only turn it on when you are in the house. Don’t smoke in bed. Don’t use it for babies or very old people who may leave it on and overheat. Those are some of the warnings.

Most new products come with a safety manual. I like to see the Bible as mine for life. I believe the Bible.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 clearly explains some of its benefits:

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

Read the Word – it’s a great manual for life.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you!
