Mr. Holmes

I very seldom go and watch a movie. Watching at home is far more suitable to me, as I can cross-stitch or do a few other things while I watch. When watching a film at a cinema, there’s no multi-tasking there. You have to sit and watch. As a result, I seldom go, but recently was persuaded to go and watch this BBC production of Mr. Holmes.

Mr HolmesI found the movie bitter-sweet. Sherlock Holmes, played convincingly by Ian McKellen, is an old man, in the twilight of his life, trying to overcome some of the hurdles and health issues of advanced old age.

Without revealing the plot, I’ll say nothing more than it bought back memories of my caring for Mike’s Mom. Old age is not for sissies!

It also reminded me that we all have regrets and to live without making mistakes is not possible. We are human and flawed.

I reminded me of something I have been thinking about lately: “these ARE the days.”

I am trying to embrace each and every day and enjoy it for whatever it brings. I enjoy the rain, the wind, the sunshine. I am grateful for being strong and able to run and leap and exercise. I am very, very appreciative of family and friends. I feel rich in non-material things and regularly think, ‘my cup is full.’

Despite the pressures and stress of life, which comes along as much in mine as it probably does in yours, I am thankful for the ‘bigger picture.’ God is bigger. He sees the future. I need not be concerned because everything is going to be okay.

In this depiction of Sherlock Holmes, he saw his life rush by. Time does go by very, very quickly. That’s why we need to look at today.

Stop. And. Look. At. Today.

This day is going to slip by like a quickly evaporating mist and unless we intentionally STOP and take a closer look at what is going on around us, we WILL miss it. We’ll miss the yellowness of the weed’s flowers….if we stop and notice them, we will marvel at the face that these amazing yellow daisy like posies are considered weeds. Who decided that? They look so magnificent in the grassy meadow.

I sometimes reflect upon my 10 years on air – a decade worth of week days, getting up way before dawn and spending precious hours away from my family. When I stopped, it was as if I had lost 10 years. My vision was blurred by a the constant presence of ‘the show.’ It went with me everywhere.  I started when Stacey was 16 and David 13. When I jumped off the hamster wheel 10 years later, I felt I had missed a decade of their lives.

Live life intentionally, or else precious moments will be stolen from you.

I learned that from Jesus Himself – He had these words recorded in John 10:10

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

I want that life to the full and I’m here to get it!

Keep the smile going.

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
