Mike’s Horrendous Flu’ And What Worked

1-20pm

What I haven’t mentioned over the last few days is that Mike got horrendous flu! He came home on Friday feeling as if he was coming down with something. A bit below par, we went to The Big Picture and he really enjoyed it. But by the time we got home, he was feeling pretty grim. He coughed his way through the night and by Saturday morning had added red eyes, a runny nose, an irritated throat and a thick head to already raised temperature, making him thoroughly ‘under the weather.’ So much so, that he cancelled our golf game! :-/  Imagine that?!

I hurriedly rummaged through my stock of pills and came up with a variety that should have helped. The Sinutab slightly cleared his nasal passages but didn’t do much to alleviate anything else.  The Sinu-flu did nothing. Viral Guard is more of a prevention, so that was a bit late.

Various flu pillsHis throat was helped by a couple of things. I gave him quite a lot of vitamin C in different forms, like strawberries and Cal-C-Vita…

Calcvita and strawberriesThe Viral Guard also contains Vitamin C. Anything acidic helped his throat. I went and bought a bulk back of Med-Lemon, which helped a little to bring his fever down…

MedlemonBut it does have downside…it contains caffeine, which kept him awake and it contains a load of sugar! Also it has a lot of aspirin, so although it helped with Mike’s fever, (to a point), don’t take more than 3 per day.

Medlemon contentsMike spent a lot of Saturday in bed. In the evening, he had his third Med-lemon of the day, in an attempt to get his 38.2C fever down. It was not very successful, coming down only .4 of a degree C.  He had a really restless night and by 3am, was boiling hot. His temperature was back up to about 38.4. We had tried everything, so I couldn’t think of what else to give him, when one of my old favourites came to mind:

GenpayneHe took one. Gen-Payne are the generic of Myprodol. Ever since I had my wisdom teeth out 20 years ago, I’ve believed in Myprodol as an effective pain relief.

MyprodolIt has an anti-inflammatory Ibuprofen and that worked like a bomb. Mike’s fever came down and, although he was still sick, he felt the relief of a more normal temperature. He spent most of Sunday in bed and first thing yesterday morning went to see the doctor, who booked him off until Friday. Today, he has been okay, but not completely right. He’s still in bed and we have just been pushing fluids.

So that’s been our 2014 flu experience.  Avoid sugar. It’s a great medium for bacteria to flourish. Push vitamin C. Get lots of fluid and rest. Catch it early and hopefully it won’t go to your chest. We hear it’s a vicious strain doing the rounds. 5 days of Mike coughing and spluttering in my airspace,  I’m still fine! So we’ll wait and see just how my immunity is!

This morning I was reminded  of God’s provision.

2 Kings 8:6

“The King asked the woman about it, and she told him. Then he assigned an official to her case and said to him, ‘give back everything that belonged to her, including all the income from her land from the day she left the country until now.'”

This is the conclusion of an incredible story. Imagine this: You are a childless woman and your Pastor comes to you and without you asking for it, he prays for you to have a child. Next thing you know, you are pregnant – you have a son whom you treasure. But while he is still young, he dies. You leave him lying on the bed, tell no one and you rush off to find your Pastor. When you do, you give him a piece of your mind – you did not ask for a child. This pain is too great to bear. The Pastor comes to your home and raises your son to life. His servant witnesses all of this and is amazed. The Pastor then says to you to take your family to another country because a famine is coming. So you do that. For 7 years you are away. When you return, you have NOTHING. So you decide to go to the King to beg for your house and land back.
What happens next is extraordinary. It ‘just so happens’ (that’s God at work!) your Pastor’s servant is AT THAT MOMENT, telling the King how the Pastor once raised to life a dead boy. You walk in, the Mother of the child. You then tell the King exactly what happened and immediately the King gives the above instruction. You get back your house, your land and ALL the money you would have made if you had been home.

Life lesson: God provides for His people. God is always on time.

You can trust Him with your Life.

God bless you today!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂

Gratitude Pic…had to smile at Truffles. There’s a cold front coming and yet she goes outside onto the balcony and curls herself up into a tight little ball, trying to stay warm, with the wind whistling through her fur! (Before I left for Bible study):

Truffles trying to get warm on the balconyShe eventually learned that inside at Mike’s feet was a far better place…(After I came home from Bible study):
