Mike’s Best Golf Ever

I nearly didn’t go. The storm was on Friday and Mike had scheduled a 7-50am tee off time for Saturday morning at Simon’s Town Golf Club. I debated in my mind about whether I should go or not. Eventually, I asked myself the Andy Stanley question, “In light of your past experience, current circumstances and future hopes and dreams, what is the wise thing for you to do?” Yip! Even for this little decision, I asked myself that question and of course, thought “just go!” There was no reason not to.

So early Saturday morning, I sat and watched Mike practice his putting while Phil raised the flags…

Shortly after that, Mike teed off. He was playing in a three-ball and he played well. He has been practising a lot and all that practice is beginning to pay off. Simons Town Golf course is a 9 hole, played twice, par 66. Mike went round in 75. Really impressive.

It was a spectacular day. Hardly a breath of wind and some cloud cover. As I walked with him, cleaned and handed him clubs, tended the flag and egged him on, I felt so glad that I had come. The other two of the three-ball were playing together and Mike was sort of playing against them, so it was tough. 1 against 2. With me there, at least he had company and I was so fully on his side.

These are the days.

As we progressed through the course, I could see he was doing well. No 6s, a number of pars. This was going well. As we headed down the penultimate hole, I kept his score to myself. On the second 9, he had parred the first 3 holes. He parred 17 and then 18 and finished the back 9 on 36. He was amazed. I was too!

It was a great day.

When Mike retired, we had a conversation about his pleasure in playing golf and my enjoyment of hiking the mountains. So Saturday we played golf and Sunday we did the Chapman’s Peak hike. Perhaps next time we won’t take on such a gruelling hike, but even since yesterday, we have looked in awe at the top and said a number of times, ‘that’s where we were!’ Hectic!

Today, my knees are doing okay and while I feel some stiffness, I’m feeling good. Mike is completely fine!

Meanwhile, my online work is going up a notch and I am anticipating some full time weeks ahead. Some careful time management is required. I never imagined that I would be working 40 hour weeks from home. I don’t think it will be every week but it will be a few.

I remember as a teenager memorising Proverbs 16:3

Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.

I committed my work to the Lord so often. I laid it all out, from exams to major dreams, of my planned move to Cape Town to nursing subjects. Still today, I find myself committing my work to the Lord, praying that His will be done and that He will be glorified.

These are the days.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
