Load-shedding – To Be Or Not To Be…

1-52pm

Oh boy, that is the question isn’t it?  Last night the lights went out for about 10 minutes in the Fish Hoek area. Then they sprang back into life and the news was that the Load-shedding schedule had been suspended until further notice and that’s what sits on the City of Cape Town’s load-shedding page at the moment…

Loadshedding

But it doesn’t mean that it will stay that way. I perused websites and social media and uncovered the following…

1. A crack in a coal storage silo in Majuba Power Station in Mpumalanga caused the loss of 1 800MW of electricity. Emergency nationwide loadshedding was implemented. Initially, it was expected to last the whole week, but the situation appears much better than first thought.

2. Andrew Etzinger spoke to Morning Live and said, while power supply remains tight, he did not anticipate any further loadshedding until possibly this evening after 6pm – this is the 6 minute interview…..

The load-shedding schedule is important to know about because if anything goes wrong at Eskom, that is what they will use.

Bottom line, from what I read & hear, unless anything changes, is that there will be no load-shedding today. If there is load-shedding this week, it will most probably not be day time, but rather after 6pm, so get dinner sorted early!

If we do lose power, the biggest hassle is the lack of internet! I can haul out the gas cylinder and power up the gas stove and boil water and cook food. That would be if it didn’t come on in half an hour. If an hour passes and it’s still not on, it would mean even heavier hauling out of the generator and connecting that up – with that we can run our internet, fridge, TV and a light or two…that covers all bases!

Best thing about load-shedding is the lack of light pollution – take full advantage of the appreciating the magnificent canopy of stars….

There is something powerful about simplifying life. I remember many years ago, when the children were very small, going away for the weekend. We spent 2 nights in a tiny one roomed cottage that officially slept three. Mike & I slept in a double bed in one corner of the room and Stacey and David slept head to toe in a single bed in the other corner of the room. This must be how many people across our country live their normal lives. There was a tiny kitchen and a bathroom. It was a brick. (I read online that about 4 million South Africans still live in shacks). I remember well lying awake in bed that night listening to the breathing of my sleeping family. I marvelled at how simple life could be. We didn’t need much. We were altogether. We were warm. We were dry. We were fed.  One of my goals is to continue simplifying….getting rid of the excess in my life….sorting possessions that need to remain in such a way that there is order. I want to live with less.

So if Eskom power goes out, take advantage of breaking away from technology, lighting a candle and talking to one another in the darkness…favourite memories, biggest heartbreaks, aims and dreams. The lights going out may just slow life down a bit allowing us to catch our breath in a frenetic life and to show what’s possible when we simplify.

Jeremiah 10:12

It is He who made the earth by His power, who established the world by His wisdom,
and by His understanding stretched out the heavens.

God has the real power!

Keep the smile going!

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂

Gratitude Pic…I discovered, while Weetbix is high in carbs, it is do-able for those of us who don’t need to restrict carbs too drastically…1 Weetbix = 11.5g of carbs less 2.1g of dietary fibre. I had one this morning for the first time in 2 years. It was good!
