That’s a conundrum….that I could dump my ADSL line and my Internet Service Provider and yet get faster internet and it’s not through any of the cell phone providers either.
How?
WIRELESSLY!
Last week, while all the rain was falling, I had electrician Devereux arrive and he put together the back-end of the wiring needed for a new ‘line of sight’ system. On Monday the dish was put outside and faced towards a certain spot on the mountain that will connect our link to the WWW.
Now we have a wireless link that connects us to the internet. We have got an uncapped 2meg line as we had with the ADSL Telkom offered us, but as this line is wireless, we don’t need the Telkom line any more. With the Telkom line and ISP, we were paying R499 per month and getting 6kb/second which was painfully slow!
On Monday, Devereux was back and did the final work that needed to be done. Wired us all up and boom, our internet access went from 6kb/second to 150kb/second. The cost? R450 per month, although there was a set up of R3100, including the set-up, equipment and a new wi-fi unit.
I need to give a calendar month’s notice before my ISP service ends. As they pay for the Telkom line, I will have to pay both until the end of July. Once that’s done, I will also be able to reduce my Telkom service – instead of paying R250 per month, I can get that down to R100, just to keep the line open. This internet is not dependent on Telkom, so if I wanted to, I could get rid of my land-line altogether. Doesn’t that sound attractive?!
What makes us more excited about this is that it takes us one step closer to getting internet when load-shedding. That will be our next plan.
For us, it makes such a difference to not see that darned ‘buffering’ sign – just never being able to properly connect, waiting for several minutes to try and get my blog posted and for Mike to not be able to upload his radio show. This is making our lives much, much easier. I’m so glad we were able to get it.
So this is just to let you know that there are other options. You do have to be line of sight of one of the antennas but it’s worth inquiring. We are 48 hours in and the speed has been down to 50kb/second which is still so much better than we were getting. This flyer is for the Fish Hoek and surrounding area, but they are expanding all the time, so email or phone and find out what is possible in your area.
It was with great enthusiasm that I called our ISP this morning and handed in our notice.
I am grateful!
Evaluate everything you do against the Word of God:
1 Corinthians 6:12
“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be enslaved by anything.
And while I need the internet to work, I won’t be enslaved by it!
Yeah!
Keep the smile going!
God bless you!
In His Grip,
Helga xx 🙂
