This was quite an interesting comment I heard a random person on TV say about relocating to the other side of the world.
Don’t waste your life was the bottom line – just get out there and live your best life, making it count – not so much in the amount of money you earn or the possessions you own, but how you live.
This morning, I started reading the book of Micah in the Old Testament. Micah was a small town boy. He wasn’t like other prophets who visited kings and frequented palaces. He lived during a very dark time. There was a brutal war going on – more than 100 000 people died. It was ugly. Yet Micah saw beyond the darkness. He spoke of a time to come – he predicted the coming of Christ and amidst a lot of other prophesies, he drops suggestions of how to live. One of the most commonly quoted verses from Micah is from chapter 6:8
“What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
I cannot think of a more succinct Bible verse that so clearly sums up how to live my life. It impacts every day. I act justly when I turn the clock off my work computer to run an errand. In doing so, I am not robbing my boss of time spent on my chores. I act justly when I point out an error in the cashier’s change. I love mercy when I notice those around me. I love mercy when I am gracious and kind to the lowliest of men. I am walking humbly with God when I acknowledge daily, moment by moment, that it’s not about me. It’s not about stuff. It’s about giving and loving and helping others. It’s about sowing into their lives; elevating their status; taking my eyes off me and looking outward.
Micah also points out the importance of keeping focused. In chapter 4:5
“All the nations may walk in the name of their gods; we will walk in the Name of the Lord our God forever and ever.”
Keep focused – stay faithful. It’s now what you have, but how you live your life.
In the end that’s what will count. When the end of my days come, it won’t be great achievements, a house, a car and other possessions – it will be how I lived my life – with love and mercy, honour and humility.
Life is short. Lives end here on earth, but life carries on for those left behind.
Putting our earthly lives back on track is a heart decision. Choosing to make right with God; choosing to walk in the Name of the Lord our God forever. Choosing justice, mercy and humility.
It’s not what you have – it’s how you live your life.
It’s your choice.
Keep the smile going!
God bless you!
