How Did This Happen?

Saturday

Today was the day…

The truck carrying Julian’s furniture arrived at 4am. The occupants slept for a few hours and then woke up and jumped into action. With a couple of other hired hands, the truck was unpacked and the furniture was lugged up the 80 steps + an extra 15 to Julian’s floor. We pulled off a chunk of the bubble wrap for use on the solar panels. The workers were quick. As soon as they were done, they went across to our old house and picked up the 34 year old wall units, a writing bureau that Mike also made and a bench. They were bought back. The bench looks perfect on our balcony. It needs a bit of freshening up – it will be a nice project for Courage some time in the future…

This part of the balcony doesn’t yet have its balustrade. Werner was due to come and do the tiling today, but there has been no water since late yesterday evening! A broken local hydrant was to blame and it took the Council several hours today to replace it.  Finally the water came on at about 3pm. View from the bench…

When it comes, the balustrade will block the bottom half of the view.  While all this was happening, Jerome and his colleague were putting tinting on the windows facing Fish Hoek and the mountainside. Now no one can see in when they are on those sides and it also offers protection from the hot summer sun which shines in during the afternoon.  Jerome is fantastic. He did a great job and had a great attitude towards our 80 steps!

The moving team went back to our old house to load up the books Julian had stored there. They loaded up as many as the truck could take, plus the 9 solar panels and their batteries and by just after 2pm, they were on their way back to Johannesburg.  Mike oversaw proceedings and then went home to have breakfast!! Meanwhile, I saw the tinting fellows out and then went to the airport to pick up Jess and Gerrie who are here for a week. We went straight to the old house, so Gerrie could check the truck was good to go. We then came home. The mist had lifted. The sun was shining. A gentle north wind was blowing and the entire scene looked like something out of a movie. How did this happen? That was the question Mike and I asked each other. We regularly shake our heads in disbelief that we get to live here. View from the balcony…

Jess and Gerrie were shown around and approve! I think there are few who would not. Jess has followed the build here on my blog but agrees the photos just can’t do it justice.

The compromise is for sure the 80 steps – I’m about to do them for the 6th time today as I go shopping as soon as I’ve done this.
