He Was There

Yesterday, even though the wind was howling and grit was being thrown up in my face, I trudged determinedly towards Clovelly Golf Club to meet up with Mike. There’s always a moment of uncertainly as I leave the house. It’s when I close the door behind me. It locks automatically and not taking a key with me, I recognise there’s no turning back. The only way back in, is to blow to Mike and return with him.

I took with me a piece of paper with the first half of John 1 printed on it and I started to memorise it. We know John 1:1

“In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.”

When I got to verse two, I was amazed.

“He was with God in the beginning.”

John is referring to Jesus.

He was with God in the beginning.

He was there.

Way back in Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth….

The world

…Jesus was there.

As I pondered and memorised verses 1-5, they became more meaningful – captured in the first 5 verses of the gospel of John is a summary of Jesus and what He would mean for all mankind. I read it like this:

In the beginning was Jesus and Jesus was with God and Jesus  was God. Jesus was with God in the beginning. Through Jesus all things were made; without Jesus nothing was made that has been made. In Jesus was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Jesus would become the Light for all mankind. John knew that was going to happen.

John 8:12

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

There is a picture painted by William Holman Hunt which is entitled The Light of the World.

Jesus knocking at the door. There is no handle on the outside. The only way the door can be opened is from the inside. That’s you and me. We open the doors of our heart to Jesus.

He never bashes the door down. He waits.

And as He was there in the beginning, He is there now.

Waiting for doors to open.

Bringing light & life to those who do.

What a gift.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
