11-05am
Yesterday, a blaze of note swept across the Fish Hoek mountain side. It began in Glencairn and with a stiff south-easterly wind blowing, it moved over the mountain towards the top row of Fish Hoek houses. It always amazes me that something so pretty and seemingly innocuous….
From all over the valley, the scene looked devastating…
The heroes of the day had to be the Fish Hoek (and Cape Town) fire service. Apparently there were more than 200 firefighters and 3 helicopters. Some had come straight from fighting another fire in the District 6 area. As you can see from this photo, the fire came down the mountain threatening homes and scaring residents.
Homeowners and tenants were warned to remove any valuables, evacuating homes and removing pets…
The helicopters were hard at work…
Backwards and forwards they went…collecting water to dump on the flames…
Flying through smokey conditions…
Which looked both spectacular and dangerous…
Their job was effective…
And of course, the helicopters had to refuel…this is at the Glencairn fields…
The fire was devastating razing thousands of square metres of land, causing great plumes of black smoke to descend over the valley, bring with it showers of ash…
The flames were high and fierce…
Charred remains left behind …
Fire sweeping up the mountain…
This morning, the helicopters were out again by about 6am. The fire had burned throughout the night, but it seems no houses were in danger. I notice there is still smoke pouring off one part of the mountain, but it doesn’t seem near a residential area. Every now and again, we hear a siren or helicopter, but it appears that the fire is under control.
The heroes of the day have to be the helicopter pilots and their ground team…
Thanks to all the fabulous Fish Hoek photographers for capturing some amazing pictures.

I hope we have seen the back of it.
Keep the smile going.
God bless you!
