Curing My Hiccups

It’s not often I get hiccups, but this morning as I brushed my teeth, I must have swallowed some air (common cause of hiccups) and the next thing I was hiccuping like crazy. On the odd occasion that I get hiccups, the first thing I usually do is hold my breath for as long as I can. That usually stops them, but this morning, I was holding my breath and still hiccuping. So I gave that up and simply waited for them to go. But they didn’t. Eventually Mike said, “There’s one absolute definite way to get rid of hiccups. Go to the kitchen and have a swig of vinegar – that is guaranteed to get of rid them.” I’m sure it would, but I wasn’t about to knock back some neat vinegar.

I went back to my childhood, half filled a glass of water and did this….

Drinking from the back of a glass

I drank from the back lip of the glass.

And did not hiccup again……much to Mike’s surprise.

It worked!! I’m sure the vinegar would have as well, but this was far less difficult.

Answers in Genesis website says:

“What is a hiccup, anyway? And what’s the deal with that funny noise? A hiccup happens when your diaphragm (a muscle that helps you breathe) spasms. You suddenly inhale. Your vocal cords then slam shut, causing the tell-tale “hic” sound. This will happen over and over until your diaphragm cools it.”

The only reason why I’m writing about it is because drinking the water from the back lip of the glass cured it and Mike was amazed!

Otherwise, like a lot of other things that occur in my life, the hiccups were a none-event.

None-events. I guess that is what life is made up of. A lot of ordinary days periodically punctuated by the memorable moments.

One of them happened yesterday at Wimbledon. Out of the thousands of matches that Roger Federer has played, he said he didn’t think he had ever played someone with such a low ranking in a major tournament, yet, he said he would remember this match. Why, because his opponent Marcus Willis is British and had the entire crowd behind him and even though he was definitely going to be outplayed by Roger, he was determined to enjoy it. Never before had he played before such a large crowd. It was overwhelming. Going down 6-0 in the first set, he managed to take 7 games off Roger before the match ended. He relished the opportunity after only winning 220 pounds this year (compared to Roger’s hundreds of thousands of pounds so far in 2016) – Marcus earns more as a tennis coach than a professional.  It was by no means an ordinary match- the day when the 770th tennis player in the world met the 3rd. While Roger Federer won the match, it could be said that Marcus Willis won the day.

He was a great sport, despite it being more than a hiccup running into Roger Federer!

There are no none events in God’s eyes. He sees it all. He hears it all. He responds to it all.

I found a lovely translation of Psalm 116:2 (New Living Version)

Because He bends down to listen,  I will pray as long as I have breath!

These are the days.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
