Last night was quite strange. I felt as if I was changing jobs and I should write to someone and say thank you for the amazing opportunity. You see from today, I’m no longer working through Upwork as a freelancer. From today, I’m working directly with Edvectus.
It has been a two year journey since I sat on my bed with my laptop on my lap and I thoughtfully applied for a position with a British company that was looking for someone in South Africa who could speak Afrikaans. Therein lay the problem. My Afrikaans is extremely elementary. As I took the plunge and hit ‘apply’ up came an application form, asking about myself and one of the questions was, “can you speak Afrikaans?” I didn’t want to lie.
I pondered why they would need me to speak Afrikaans. I wondered if the person who would be reading this application was Afrikaans. In the end I wrote, “Ek kan ‘n bietjie praat.” I figured that if they weren’t Afrikaans speakers and I was going to be the ‘expert’ a bit of Afrikaans would work. I figured if they were Afrikaans speakers, they would know that I could only speak a bit. I did have the right surname!
It worked. Ping! I got an email back. Can I Skype? And so Skype I did. I was so new to Skype. I hardly knew how it worked. The interview went well and Diane, a real mover and shaker in the teacher recruitment world and who was starting her second teacher recruitment company asked when I could start. I said I was going to Zanzibar for a week and I could start on my return. She ignored that and said, ‘can you start tomorrow and do a bit of work for us until you leave?’ Okay.
And that was how my journey with Edvectus began. The job started small and I was determined to be the best I could be. They didn’t know me. They didn’t know they could trust me. I had to prove myself. Starting off at $5 an hour, I did the best job I could do.
And so it grew.
Now, two years and 6 weeks later, we are untying our relationship from Upwork. I am working directly for them. I will invoice them monthly and they will pay me directly.
It’s hard to believe that I enjoy working for them so much. I always knew I loved radio presenting, but I knew 10 years of those early mornings and 2 decades of radio altogether had to end. They needed fresh feet. I needed to rest and rediscover normalcy.
Now I have a new venture and I am really enjoying it.
Thank you Upwork for introducing me to Edvectus. I appreciate you.
But mostly, I say thank you to the Lord who graciously guided me into another position which would be a great fit for Mike & I. I work from home and while I’m unexpectedly busy with it all right now, I’m seeing the fruit of my labour and I’m enjoying it.
I never believed I would find a job as fulfilling as the morning drive show. But that’s not how God works. He doesn’t only bless once. His blessings can be multiple. I am grateful to be the recipient. It is my goal to be a humble and appreciative servant.
Deuteronomy 8:18
Remember the LORD your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful
Remember the Lord.
These are the days.
Keep the smile going.
God bless you!
In His Grip,
Helga xx 🙂
