Cat On My Back

Very wintry weather we are having in Cape Town – the Cape of Storms is living up to its name with the Peninsula being battered by strong winds and rain. And with it my cat is showing  loyalty to her owner. She meows and meows and finally is happy when I climb into bed. While I’m reading before turning in, she will come and settle on my stomach. But the real sleep for her comes after I’ve settled in for the night. She watches as I throw off the extra cushion, roll onto my stomach and go to sleep. Without hesitation, she climbs up on my back and goes to sleep. Last night as Mike came up to bed, I stirred enough to feel this weight on my back and groggily said, “Please take a photo of this cat on my back.” He did.

Tuffles on my back

The funniest thing is when I roll over. Eventually, I roll onto my right side, tipping her into the middle of the bed. No worries. As soon as I have finished, she climbs back onto my left hip and there she perches until I move again. When I moved again, she mooched off the bed and found somewhere else to sleep. Truffles van Niecat!

I’m very fond of her and her devotion to me is clear, although I hasten to add, as I’m sure I’ve said before, that Truffles devotion is on her terms. She’s loving and friendly when she wants to be.

This morning when I woke up, I read  some final words from Joshua. In the twilight of his life, he reminds God’s people to choose. Truffles chooses to follow me, sometimes in a very fickle way – it resonates with me as a human. We so often follow God in a haphazard, when it suits us, fashion. Joshua’s words resound down the centuries,

Joshua 24:15

“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

The older I get the more I realise how important it is to follow Christ. It’s not something simple to understand – how to follow Jesus – who is God – who came to earth as a Man and gave Himself for us. Even after decades as a Christian, it’s not a simple concept to get my head around. But I believe the Bible and I believe in Jesus Christ. He stirs my heart. I feel His presence. I have faith in Him. So I will follow Him.

Follow Jesus

Choose well.

These are the days.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
