You have to have gone to the Drakensberg and done some of their amazing river walks to appreciate how much this Cape secret looks just like ‘the berg’. I have heard about this walk for years. It’s been another one of the walks around my area that I have never done. Yesterday Julian and I did it. It took less than an hour and that was taking the long way back.
The walk starts from Gate 2 of the Silvermine reserve. If you are coming from Cape Town side, it’s the entrance at the top of the pass on the Left of Ou Kaapse Weg. It’s called Gate 2, so you should be able to identify it. After parking, you set off (direction of Fish Hoek) along a broad jeep track that is easy walking.
About 15 minutes along, you will get to a small sign…
Opposite it is a stone pedestal that has a useful map for you to photograph…
Turn right at the waterfall path and you immediately start a descent…
Which takes you down towards the base of the waterfall…
It’s quite a steep descent…and remember what goes down, must come back up again. When you get to the grey rocks you can see in the photo above, you turn right and keep on going down…
The view is lovely…
And the waterfall quickly comes into sight through the trees…
The final bit of descent is down a wooden flight of stairs…
And then you arrive at this amazing riverside…
It is just so lovely. It only took about 25 minutes to get there from the car park, so it’s not far. To return, retrace your steps to the grey rocks – it’s a level rock platform at the top of the waterfall. If the river is not raging too high, you can turn right and follow the path over the river and up to the main track. When you get there, turn left and you will be on the jeep track that takes you back to the car park. We did this and I think it was longer, but easier than going back up all the steps the way we had come.
I can’t wait to do it again. It’s a little piece of Cape paradise and well worth the effort.
Revelation 4:11
“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
And we get to enjoy them.
These are the days.
Keep the smile going.
God bless you!
In His Grip,
