25 Years in Fish Hoek And I Finally Visited This Place…

1-16pm

Today my family visitors left for Johannesburg. We had a last breakfast and then visited a place I’ve never  been to before. Despite being in the Fish Hoek Valley for more than 25 years, today, I stepped into Fish Hoek Valley Museum for the first time. Founders of our little town were Mr. & Mrs. Izak de Villiers who, on Mrs. de Villiers death in 1918, ceded the land to become the town of Fish Hoek. The land was broken up and sold for between 40 pounds and 110 pounds.

Prior to that the town looked very different to what it is today. Stories from as far back as 1796 have been documented…tales of fishermen, whalers and pirates, all who trod the shores of our beloved Fish Hoek beach more than 200 years ago. The history of my town goes back a long time. If you want to know more and have time to read, click over to this website…

A History of Fish Hoek

Meantime a few famous people are featured at the Fish Hoek museum. South Africa’s first professional golfer Bobby Locke made his home in the area, owning a petrol station on the Main Rd. After his death, a set of his golf clubs was donated to the museum…

Bobby Locke golfSimonstown came to be in 1687, named after the Governor of the Cape Simon van der Stel suggested a safer mooring site for ships. The Bay False was more protected than rough Table Bay.  Simon van der Stel also gave orders that fishing nets be thrown out off Fish Hoek beach and so the age old tradition of this was started…(this is 1910)

If you enjoy a walk back in time, visit the Fish Hoek Museum on the right of the entrance to the Civic Centre. Entrance is free, but a donation is welcome! The volunteer curators are enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Fish Hoek  Valley Museum has a Facebook page which you can join here. From time to time they post historic photos of the area.

I’ve said it before: we live suspended in time….thousands of years have passed – possibly thousands to come. We can’t have a ‘do-over’. We can’t turn back the clock. This is it. We only get one shot at this life. The thoughts we think today, the words we say,  the actions we take, they can all contribute to our life, or they can contaminate it. Think the right thoughts, say worthy words, do what is right.

Proverbs 18:21

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Keep the smile going!

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
