UK Got It Wrong – SA Is Doing It Right – Ebola Virus

9-46am

An amazing 452 people have gone to a blog I wrote on 14th October 2014. It was an update on the Ebola virus in Cape Town. Visitors to South Africa want to know if Ebola is here. They land on this page through some of the strangest Google searches. One person Googled, “Do Cape Town beaches have Ebola?” 🙂  No. They don’t!

I regularly update the blog’s date, doing my bit in reassuring potential visitors that, as far as being reported, South Africa is ‘Ebola-free.’ But, the potential for Ebola to enter this country has just got 11 times higher ..

Ebola entered UK  via health workers contracting the disease in West Africa and returning home with it. These workers are also at risk, but South Africa is doing something different.

Keeping the health workers quarantined on their return is the safest and most sensible course of action. SA is doing what the UK should have done, but didn’t. When a team of British health workers returned to the UK from West Africa, they had their temperatures taken at Heathrow and then were released to travel home. For Pauline Cafferkey, that meant boarding a flight to Glasgow, Scotland and sharing her germs with those around her. If the entire team had gone into quarantine, the illness would have been diagnosed in the security of a public-free zone. The inconvenience would have been worth it.

Well done South Africa!

The truth is that many people the world over are somewhat ignorant as to where South Africa is in relation to West Africa. They hear “Ebola” and “Africa” in the same sentence and immediately cancel plans to visit SA.  Our economy needs their visit, so this kind of ignorance has to be addressed. My brother was telling me that a book order from overseas was cancelled when the buyer heard it was coming from South Africa – her reason? She didn’t want to risk getting a book infected with Ebola!

It’s 3594  miles (5762km) from Sierra Leone to Cape Town….

There’s more Ebola in London than there is in Cape Town. Worrying about getting Ebola when you visit Cape Town is like worrying that you will get Ebola from London when you visit New York.

New Yorkites had better take precautions!

Ludicrous isn’t it?

Come to Cape Town. We are Ebola-free!

Psalm 139:8

“If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.”

It doesn’t matter where you go, God is there.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
