One of the most common online searches that brings people to this blog is ‘van Breda murders – latest news.’ Unfortunately, they are not getting anything new here. Almost daily, I too run a search to see if there has been any movement in the case. I look to see if there has been an arrest, if the National Prosecuting Authority has released any information regarding the case or if there is anything new being said in the media.
There is not.
I phoned the NPA, but couldn’t get through to the chief clerk who deals with my kind of call. I did get her email address and so have emailed to see if I can get any further information. I also emailed a SAPS journalist to see if I can get any information that way.
Generally, those who are commenting and writing to me are really mad. They are angry that nothing has been done. They are accusational towards Henri and derogatory toward the SA police.
From a citizen point of view, who is not connected with the family (which I am not), I believe that we have to understand that there is more going on than meets the eye. I first wrote about this story 9 days after it broke. It is now 72 days later. As time passes, nothing changes in that we can’t bring back those who died that dreadful night. Marli is getting the best possible treatment. She is focussing on getting well – moving forward.
Life for Henri is less than ideal. He is said to be living with relatives and keeping a very low profile. The last we heard is that he is being kept away from Marli. Usually a 20 year old would be studying or working and moving on with the job of growing up and taking responsibility. What Henri does with his time only the closest family would know. Neighbours have said he seldom is seen outside.
If behind police scenes, the evidence is mounting that Henri is responsible for these murders, it can’t be kept a secret for ever. On 6th May it will be 100 days since the killings. By then, hopefully there will have been some movement in the case.
When evil things happen and there are many of them – the dreadful Kenyan massacre, the brutal slaying of the Egyptian Christians, the killing of the family of Hannelie Groenewald and others, it is hard for me to dwell on them. The fear, the violence, the bloodbath that surrounds them, the consequences – it’s all agonising and depressing.
This life is all we know, but it’s not all there is. Full justice cannot take place here. People get away with murder all the time. But one day they will be called to account. It does not end when we take our last breath. One day, each one of us will be called to account. This comes up many times in the Bible.
In the words of Jesus, Matthew 16:27
“For the Son of Man is going to come in His Father’s glory with His angels, and then He will reward each person according to what they have done.”
2 Corinthians 5:10
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.”
Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 3:17
“I said to myself, “God will bring into judgment both the righteous and the wicked, for there will be a time for every activity, a time to judge every deed.”
With all of these things, God will have the final say.
Keep calm and carry on.
God bless you.
In His Grip,
Helga
