You may have heard of the phrase ‘guard your heart’ and you may have thought of it in light of a romantic relationship prior to marriage. But I believe it goes far deeper than that and is beneficial at so many different levels.
It is a phrase that comes out of the Bible. Solomon’s wisdom and it’s wise to read a bit more than just that one phrase…
Proverbs 4:23-27
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet
and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.
I love the (often-times) simplicity of the Bible:
- Guard your heart.
- Keep your mouth shut.
- Look straight ahead.
- Be steadfast.
When you act upon these words, it prevents you from getting hurt.
When you don’t allow your heart to be unwisely enveloped by another person or another thing, you will be guarding it.
While I love my husband, my children and my family and friends, ultimately, they are all human and they can’t be everything to me.
I have to depend on something more.
My heart is fully secure when God has it.
While it’s far more open to those I love, I am glad it is guarded sufficiently to know that if something catastrophic happened, my wobble would be under-girded by the security of God’s presence in my life.
You cannot depend on human beings.
They will let you down.
God never will.
He always has my (and your) interest at heart and while bad things may happen to us, He is the keeper of our souls, the safety net of our lives, the eternal assurance of our minds, the careful keeper of our hearts.
When I guard my heart, I am preventing myself from being permanently scarred by others. When I follow the wisdom of these verses, I keep myself from hurting others – I keep my mouth shut. I look straight ahead. I remain steadfast. My eye is on the goal. I want to do what is right, to be an encouragement to others.
I fail often.
Daily.
Miserably.
But God has my heart and when I know I’ve blown it, He is willing to forgive, pick me up, put my brokenness back together and set me on the straight and narrow.
I breath a sigh of relief.
He’s got me in His grip and it’s the most secure place to be.
Guard your heart – for everything you do flows from it.
Profound wisdom.
Keep the smile going.
In His Grip!
