Hiking to Peer’s Cave is not too difficult. This historic site is situated above the dunes behind the sports fields between Fish Hoek and Sun Valley. The traditional route was from the fields and up over the dunes. That’s the way I went about 25 years ago when I first did it. Nowadays though, there is an easier route. It is 2.37km to be exact, an easy upward walk with a little scrambling over rocks. With stops to admire the view and take photos, it only took us just over an hour, that’s according to my “Map My Fitness” app…
The green and red spots are where we began. It’s at a bend of Ou Kaapse Weg as it turns from the Sun Valley side to go down towards Silvermine Village turn off. There is a little car park on the right, which is where we parked. We also immediately noticed shards of glass on the ground, indicative of some looting of unattended cars. Make sure there are no valuables visible inside your car and if you are uncertain, drive down to the retirement village to park there – and pay the car guard to keep an eye on your vehicle. We took a chance. The signpost gives clear directions…
We set off on a comfortable sandy path…
With spring having sprung, there is a lot of flowers popping up which stand out against their green background…
There are also these fynbos plants which are popping up all over the place…
The path heads up towards the rocky outcrops, passing many burnt bushes, still unrecovered from the March fire that swept through the area…You have to scramble up the rocky path a bit, but eventually, as you get closer to the cave, you find yourself walking along a narrow rock-side path…
The view back is of Chapman’s Peak…
Eventually, you get to the cave…you can’t miss it…Inscription on the roof of the cave…
This is taken from inside the cave looking out….
And this is taken just outside of the cave looking towards Fish Hoek…
On our return trip we did more scrambling and took the route behind the rocks and admired the view through the smaller tunnel cave. There is a much bigger one by the beacon at the top, but by the time we got here, it was getting late and we did not have time to explore further…
We returned to the car, finding it safe and sound. A really lovely Sunday afternoon walk. Next time, we’ll go for longer. Don’t walk alone.
Psalm 121:1-2
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
Keep the smile going!
God bless you!
