It was 4-48am, when Mike kissed me goodbye and I quietly drove through the streets towards Fish Hoek.
No two trips to Swellendam are the same. This morning when I turned into Atlantic Rd in Muizenberg, I had 11 cars in front of me. One of them turned onto Prince George Drive and the other ten went before me onto Baden-Powell. They soon all turned off and I found myself alone on the dark road, passing Khayelitsha and finally onto the freeway. It was a quiet morning. I only passed 40 cars before turning onto the N2. The traffic lights through Somerset West were kind to me. I stopped at one of the eight.
And so over Sir Lowry’s Pass I went, bidding farewell to the twinkling lights of the city and looking ahead to the rolling hills of the hinterland. Arriving in Caledon, I stopped for five minutes, told Mike where I was and ordered coffee. Soon even Riviersonderend was behind me. The sun was rising behind puffy clouds and it was cool and pleasant. Every time I do this trip I am reminded of the beauty of the Western Cape. It is spectacular. I decided to stop at a lay-by and just appreciate the view…
I drove into Swellendam just after 7-30am. It is exactly 220km from my front door to Adrian and Stacey’s. It was wonderful to see them and of course to see Elsie who is just too adorable for words.
Stacey and I went out for tea and stopped by the berry farm. I spent Elsie’s waking hours enjoying her company. She is so cute. She pulls herself up with ease, loves looking at things and examining my watch, my rings, my teeth, my shoes, my handbag and anything else she can get her hands on.
Mike’s golf went very well and at the moment he’s lying second in his division.
I’m going to get an early night and head home quite early to avoid the end of school holiday traffic.
