Seen From the Balcony

Friday

Today was the day…

…the sea was flat and the wind was gentle. That was how the day began. I swam for about 20 minutes. There was thick cloud cover. It wasn’t long before I noticed a whole lot of the swimmers standing up in the water and looking out to sea. I caught snippets of ‘orca whale’ , ‘did you see that?’ and ‘oh wow!’ I had a look but couldn’t see anything. Towards the end of my time in the water, I swam a little further along the beach towards the Clovelly side. As I turned back, I looked again out to sea and there, not far from the beach I spotted the tell-tale large dorsal fin of the whale.  When I joined Mike on the bench, I pointed the area out to him just in time for it to rise out of the water. Stating the obvious, these sea mammals never dance on command! They rise when they feel like it and  entertain you for all of 5 seconds before disappearing altogether. Only the patient and most hawk-eyed may get to see them a few times.

It turned out that while we were walking back along the cat walk, the whale was heading toward Simon’s Town and he briefly graced us with his presence a couple more times. When we got home, our good fortune continued. I went up to Julian’s floor and told him of this rare sighting. We went out on the balcony in time to see the fellow display his fin and arch of his back and he was gone.

On our neighbourhood chat site, a chap called Eric was more patient. With his lens trained on the ocean, he waited and finally was handsomely rewarded. We got to see the photo…

Perhaps they come in to warmer waters overnight and head out into the middle of the bay during the day. I’ll keep an eye out.

There was more to see from the balcony today. I noticed three boats all close together and moving very slowly, if at all. I wondered what that was all about, so I got the binoculars and to my surprise, they were surrounding a number of swimmers who were swimming towards Fish Hoek. I’m not sure from where they started, but it looked like hard work.

I watched them swim all the way to Fish Hoek beach and arrive at their destination. The boats then sped back towards Simon’s Town…

This morning I had a little social distancing outside visit with some friends…this is on the grass outside the surf ski club…

From there I went to have my eyes tested. New reading specs are on the way.

This afternoon I worked and this evening I will walk. Yay for the weekend!

1 John 3:1

See how very much our Father loves us, for He calls us His children, and that is what we are.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
