One Year in the New House

Saturday

Today was the day…

We celebrate 1 year in the new house. How has that gone to quickly. A year ago, we moved in, even though things were not quite finished…this was the day we moved in

This is today. Much more lived in. The counter chairs have been painted.

The table is much better by the window.

I was thinking of the top six things I love the  most.

  1. The view. This is an obvious one. It is just so expansive. From where I sit right now at my desk, I can see Constantia mountain with the TV mast and when I turn right around, I can see the entrance to False Bay.
  2. The night lights – almost every single night I am entranced by the beauty of the lights of Kalk Bay and beyond. They are magical.
  3. The birds – the amazing number of both sea and mountain birds – they are a delight. They have surprised us in beauty and variety. We are so high up that to have sea gulls fly right past our bedroom window is always amazing to us. The endless stream of birds visiting the nectar bottle bring me joy every single day.
  4. The Kitchen! I’m not a big cook, but it is wonderful to have a lovely open plan, well constructed kitchen with all the mod-cons including a scullery to hide the mess and a dishwasher to clean it all up.
  5. The design. Mike has done a fabulous job in designing this place. It is so well thought through and I am hard pressed to find something I would do differently, that’s as far as the design goes.
  6. Our floor – what to put on our floor was the subject of prolonged debate during the build. Mike loved a very inexpensive 600mm2 tile – we bought boxes of them and put them in the Little Lookout and in the one bed apartment below us, but I didn’t want them for our floor – they look too much like a shopping mall. I wanted a wood look and feel. We thought about laminate but it’s not great with water and as the floor would run into the kitchen, it wasn’t practical. Eventually, after much discussion and increasing the budget we got a wood-like floor tile that is marvellous. It looks great and Werner did a fabulous job in laying it.

A year later, it still looks great.

What I don’t like:

This may surprise you! There are 83 steps to my front door, but it is NOT the steps that bother me. We are so used to them now. They are there and we walk up and down them and I never complain about them. They are great exercise and when people come to visit, I will meet them on the street and see them back to their car. The steps are not a problem for me. They may be in the future, but right now, they are not the thing I don’t like.

The thing I don’t like is:

My shower floor! It has little hexagonal tiles which didn’t turn out as well as I would have liked. Plus the glass sheet of the shower has sealant along the bottom and this has discoloured. I’ve concluded this will be the first part of the house to be renovated!

Happy one year in the house! Cheers!

Daniel 2:23

I thank and praise You, God of my ancestors, for You have given me wisdom and strength.

How appropriate!

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
