Married To A Pensioner

Mike & I live in a bit of an age twilight zone being the age Mike is (which is 65) and being married to me (nearly 52). We most often don’t recognise him as a “pensioner” but yesterday the reality of it made us smile at each other and enjoy the moment of ‘pensionerhood!’

We had gone to the nursery (Harry Goeman on Kommetjie Rd) to buy shears. We went to the till and put through our purchase when the cashier looked at us and said, “haven’t you forgotten something?” “No, I don’t think so,” we replied. “Are you sure?” she said, “nothing else?” “No,” said we, “nothing else.” With that, she pointed to the bold sign resting on the till which we had not even noticed, ‘ASK FOR YOUR PENSIONER DISCOUNT EVERY THURSDAY’.

The light-bulb went on and we thanked the cashier and accepted the 10% discount.

We were very happy with that. On our way out, Mike said to me, “come, I want to show you something.” Taking me to the back corner of the external part of the nursery , he pointed with pleasure at a white concrete table…

It looked ideal for putting under the Manatoka tree on our new paving. I told him I really liked it as well. We discussed the price, which seemed very reasonable and debated about whether we should buy it, spurred on by the idea that it will be 10% less than the price on the label. Eventually we decided to go ahead, so back we went to the same cashier and ordered the table with two benches, got our discount and at 3pm yesterday afternoon the set arrived and was duly put in place.

Standing at my desk, I can just see it from my study window…it’s at this spot that I sit for many hours of the day…

So # 28 of my 1000 thanks is for pensioner discounts! 🙂

I’m married to a pensioner and loving every moment. We must not be afraid of ageing. Each year is a gift and the more we have the more blessed we are.

  • Those who love deeply never grow old; they may die of old age, but they die young. – Benjamin Franklin.

Isaiah 46:4

And I will still be carrying you when you are old. Your hair will turn grey, and I will still carry you. I made you, and I will carry you to safety.

Safety is in God’s hands. That’s the safest place to be.

These are the days!

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
