Julian’s Treasured Books

Tuesday

When in Johannesburg briefly last week, Julian showed me some of his most treasured books. He picked up two which were in Nelson Mandela’s Library.  This one, The Great Betrayal was written by Rhodesia’s Prime Minister, Ian Smith.  Madiba’s Private Secretary Zelda La Grange gifted it to him in 1997. She fondly referred to him as Khulu (Grandfather) This is the inscription inside…

Anton Calitz was in the Presidential protection Unit 1996 – 2001  and was the close protection detail of former president Nelson Mandela. I don’t think these two would have given this particular book to Madiba unless he had asked for it. Interesting holiday reading and probably the nature of the book is the reason it was discarded to a charity shop.

The second interesting book from Madiba’s collection is this one…given to the President by Margaret Thatcher.

Then Julian also has some amazingly old books, like this edition of Alice in Wonderland.

Not quite the first edition. It came out the year before in 1865.  Matthew Henry’s New Testament commentary is even earlier…this is 1811. Matthew Henry died in 1714.

His oldest book on Africa is this one…

It has an amazing map of Africa…

And is dated 1663..

Isn’t that amazing? Those are some of the books from Julian’s personal collection. These are ones that don’t get sold.

Today, I worked, had tea with friends, went to gym, shopped and worked some more. It’s been a good day!

October 1. All the Bible verses in my diary are on prayer this month. Here’s the first.

James 5:16

The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

These are the days.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,
