Helga’s Brunch Plate….

1-57pm

Me and my big mouth! I can safely say I never provide the eats for my Friday ladies group, so last week, I boldly and confidently announced:- “I will do all the eats for next week – leave it to me!” I even bumped into Bev in the Mall and she offered to help. “Nooo…” I said, “Every thing is under control” (secretly relieved she reminded me!). So yesterday evening, at the last minute, I went down to the Mall to buy a few ingredients. When I got home, I boiled half a dozen eggs, shelled them and put them in the fridge. I was exhausted at the end of a long day and was in bed and asleep by about 9pm. I woke up with a start at 00-45am! Wide awake, I went downstairs to the kitchen and stuffed the eggs! By 1-01am, I was back in bed and went straight back to sleep!  Up a few hours later and my day began in earnest. I needed to be quite organised, so I planned for me to leave CCFm at 8-50am.

I went home via the Main Rd.  which involved a very short wait at the roadworks, on a cool, overcast Cape Town morning. Here’s life unfolding in Kalk Bay…

Kalk BayI arrived home close to 9-15am, and jumped straight into action. First up was Helga’s Brunch Plate which turned out like this…

Helgas Brunch PlateThen I got stuck into the rye biscuits. This was a bit of an experiment. I’d never had the biscuits before and didn’t know what I was going to put on them! In the end, I buttered them with salmon cream cheese, added a bit of tomato, red pepper, a slice of avocado and a sprinkle of cheese…

Rye biscuitsThey actually tasted ok! As soon as that was done, I put them in the car and headed for the Mall where I bought a Milk Tart!

Job done!

The Ladies know I’m not great in the kitchen…I cook because I have to…I seldom cook for fun. The only time I bake is at Christmas time when I bake a most amazing Christmas Cake. I have proven myself on that score. I’ve been baking them for about a decade and have become quite a pro!  It reminds me of what I read this morning in my Bible reading. I’ve read the story of Balaam and donkey many times, but never picked this up before. For those who don’t know, there’s a guy in the Old Testament called Balaam who had a donkey. He got involved with a bunch of baddies who wanted him to curse the Israelites. Even though Balaam was trying to follow God, he (unwisely) went with them (the baddies) – his mode of transport – his (nameless) donkey. The Lord sent an angel to block their way – the donkey could see the angel but Balaam couldn’t. The donkey stopped dead in it’s tracks, fearful of the angel. Balaam yelled at it and whipped it. The angel moved on a bit. The donkey continued until it came  to the angel again. Again it stopped in it’s tracks, this time squashing Balaam’s foot against the wall. Balaam whipped the poor animal. The angel moved. Balaam carried on going until coming upon the angel again! Once more, he came to a dead stop. Balaam was furious and declared he would have killed the donkey if he could have. At that point, the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey and this is what he said, “Am I not your own donkey which you have always ridden to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?” (Numbers 22:30)  One of Dr Phil’s regular quotes came to mind. “The best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour.” If you want to see how someone is going to behave in the future, look at how they have behaved in the past. When we come to faith in Christ, we become a new creation and start building new set of behaviour patterns and a new reputation. When we make mistakes, we have to acknowledge them, apologise (or repent) and start creating a new history, earning the respect and trust of those around us.

I’ve always like that quote of Dr. Phil’s but I like it more now that I have a biblical example of it. ‘Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?’ Good question to ask myself! The best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour!  Moral of the story – develop good habits!

Now it’s Friday afternoon in Cape Town and South Africa has won the toss & elected to bat in the 2nd ODI against Pakistan – this means that I may have to forgo an afternoon nap. Maybe I can get this posted and then take 40 winks, while the match develops a bit. Yes!

Weekend! God bless you loads!

In His Grip,

Love Helga xx 🙂
