Dinner Deluxe

Last night we had quite a dinner. Dinner Deluxe indeed. To get the idea, here’s the definition of deluxe…

With it being Mike and David’s birthdays, Julian decided to treat us to one of the most spectacular restaurants in the City. The Top of the Ritz is on to the 23rd floor and boasts a revolving floor. That’s it there…the circular part of the building.

The birthday boys…

The evening began by us being welcomed with a glass of bubbly which was enjoyed on the 22nd floor. As soon as we saw the view, we knew this would be something special. The last time we were at the Top of the Ritz was probably about 25 years ago when the portions were tiny, the price was high and we left hungry. Mike was entirely underwhelmed and he did not relish the idea of returning. We had heard it had been closed for a while, refurbished and had a new set (pricey) menu. Julian was drawn in and booked for the four of for the evening of David’s birthday.

It was a very memorable evening. The decor has been updated. The food is just so well presented and it is fine dining, so don’t expect huge portions. There are just a lot of courses and we left very satisfied. You can see the menu on-line. Here are some of the highlights. A Knysna oyster with scarlet salsa ad strawberry. Whatever the scarlet salsa was, it was incredible.

Then came Cajun prawn. It was really good. Serious fusion of flavours.

I took photos of each course, but as it got darker, the quality got worse, so I’m just putting the better ones up. This was the beetroot course. It was so beautifully presented.

And there was bread..

Palate cleanser sorbet..

There was bass as the fish course and I had beef for the main. The dessert was one of the best I’ve ever seen. It was substantial and presented to the table covered with a lid. A waiter on each side of the table simultaneously removed the lid of each bowl and out poured ‘smoke’ from dried ice. It was quite dramatic. The dessert is  described as smoked chocolate mousse, chocolate soil, pebbles, white mushroom and smoke. It looked like a picture out of an Enid Blyton book….from the fairy garden. The ‘mushroom’ is a meringue.

The Petit Fours for Mike and David came like this….

So the courses were…

Canape
Appetizer
Bread and butter
Starter
Palate refresher
Fish
Beef
Dessert
Petit Fours
Coffee

If you have allergies or are vegetarian, there are other options.

And all of this while enjoying the most spectacular views of Cape Town…

David taking in the view…

Sunset….

So we may not go again for another 25 years, but it certainly was worth it for the experience.

#584 of my 1000 thanks is for the privilege of having a Top of the Ritz experience.

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

These are the days.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.
