Dear Kevin Anderson….

If I had to write to Kevin Anderson, here’s what I would write:

Dear Kevin

There have been several thrilling tennis matches this Wimbledon. We watched Dustin Brown entertain us in playing (and beating) Rafael Nadal. We saw Great Britain’s Heather Watson take a set off Serena Williams. But the unexpected dual of the tournament, thus far had to be you, our own South African Kevin Anderson take on Novak Djokovic. Before the match began, we were on tenterhooks. Djokovic is a formidable opponent.  We expected a 3 set walk-over. Or perhaps maybe only just you would scrape a set out of the game.  It was unlikely. Djokovic is so strong. He is so consistent. He is so unbeatable at the moment. You won’t win, we said.

BUT YOU ALMOST DID!

And that was what thrilled us to the core. I hardly missed a point of the 5 set 4th round match. To offset the huge amount of tension, I cross-stitched feverishly, watching points between stitches. David paced up and down. We clapped and cheered at points won; high fiving when you won a game and bellowing and roaring when you won a set.

Kevin, you are learning how to win and it’s fabulous to watch. You beat Wawrinka at Queens and darn nearly beat Djokovic at Wimbledon. The world is watching. You are knocking at the door of the single seed players, challenging them and scaring them. Certainly you  freaked Novak out a bit and left a very stony faced Boris Becker staring  sombrely down from the player’s box. You were the underdog but you snapped at Novak’s heels leaving him shouting towards his coach and having mini tennis tantrums. You never lost your cool. I loved it. I was proud. I was ecstatic.

Beating Novak Djokovic is to summit an exceedingly high mountain. You didn’t do it this time, but you got three-quarters of the way up and the view from up there was mighty fine.

Well done Kevin. You did so well! Thanks for the entertainment!

Ecclesiastes 3:1

“There is a time for everything,  and a season for every activity under the heavens;”

Your time will come. We will be watching from Cape Town, egging you on and enjoying every moment.

Keep the smile going and keep enjoying tennis!

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
