Appreciation Goes A Long Way

Yesterday afternoon, I was sitting at my desk, ploughing away at admin for the company I work for. Answering email, reading through CVs, that sort of thing. Suddenly the outside gate bell went off loud and clear. I stood up and looked to see who it was. A florist delivery vehicle was parked outside. Huh? They must have the wrong address.

As I headed downstairs, a thought went through my mind. On Friday, the MD of the company, Diane, and I were talking on Skype-chat – no audio – just writing back and forth. I said I was going to email an applicant we had been talking about, but first I needed tea. When I got back to my desk, she asked me what my home address was. I gave it to her and  asked ‘why?’ She said she wanted to send me something. I thought this was related to the fact that I had gone to make tea and I imagined getting a company mug in the  mail in three weeks time.

Maybe the florist van had something to do with this brief exchange. I didn’t want to get my hopes up until I had checked that the delivery lady had the right name and address. Only when she mentioned my name, did I think “Wow! This must be from Diane.”

And it was. A beautiful hamper of picnic goodies was delivered, along with a note, “Dear Helga, thank you so much for all your help. We really appreciate everything.”

These people pay me!

And yet they sent me this amazing gift to say thank you!

I was amazed.

Appreciation goes a long way. I had to have a photo taken to send to Diane and say thank you…

Hamper

I  felt so special.

While the contents of the hamper were great, the thing that touched me the most was that she felt the desire to do it. She really wanted to show her appreciation for what I do for the company.

It made me think. Do I really show enough appreciation to those around me? I am sure that I could pay it forward and surprise a few others who serve me in various ways.

As I had stood in the driveway and received the hamper, I did embrace the moment. They are few and far between getting florist deliveries. I do remember one occasion when Mike and I had a big barney (the topic of which I do not recall!). He went off to work and felt terrible, so he left the office, went to a florist and had flowers sent home. At about 2pm, the doorbell rang and there was this amazing arrangement with a little message reminding me of his love. I swooned! Oh the way to a girl’s heart! He arrived home about an hour later and of course, I was grinning from ear to ear.

That probably happened about 10 or more years ago. Yes, I don’t get surprise deliveries often and the moment of arrival is to be enjoyed!

My take away…

These are the days!

Keep the smile going.

God bless you!
