A Day of Strong Winds

Monday

Today was the day…

…we woke up to a raging black south-easter. While there was thick cloud cover and it looked like rain. I woke up around 6am. About half an hour later, I got up and went to make coffee, asking Mike what he wanted, coffee, tea, water, me? All the above! Ha ha. I made myself coffee and him tea. I did my Bible reading and then just after 7am, with Mike still sleeping and his tea cold, I left a note on my pillow and walked to Fish Hoek to buy some breakfast supplies.

The wind was howling. I took my keys and rucksack but not my phone so no photos were taken on this windy walk. As the gale blew me towards Fish Hoek, I knew the cat walk would be a good track to view the raging sea. The tide had been in and was now slowly receding. Large swells shoved frothy waves enthusiastically toward the rocks. The resulting spray had wet the cat walk, but I managed to dodge being drenched. It was exhilarating.

I got to Fish Hoek and bought 2 litres of milk, 1 litre of cream, 1.5kg bananas and a packet of 3 pawpaws. With my 5kg backpack I retraced my steps. Walking now into the wind, the waves sprinkled droplets of sea spray across my face. Crossing Simon’s Town road between 7 & 8am has become life-threatening. Yesterday morning 2 cars jumped the red light at Sunny Cove traffic lights. This morning it was 3.

I got home at 8am. As the day progressed, the cloud lifted and the blackness of the wind disappeared. Not that it stopped blowing – it was still as strong as ever. The only difference was there was no threat of rain.

The day was busy. We had breakfast and then Courage arrived with Schoolboy in attendance as well. Together they cleared a path under the house so they could get to a main storage area the other side of the house.  Also the fencing and poles arrive and were lugged up the hill.

I worked for 7 hours. Take a Lot arrived with a table top oven and microwave for the cottage and Mike’s new sport watch. It is his birthday present. He got it today, the first day of February and he will get another gift on his birthday – the last day of February!

After dinner, we took a walk to the end of Echo and back. This is the view from the hill…

The other thing I did today was update my photo in a few social media places. Way overdue, here I am…gradually going grey!

While the wind howls into the night, we are told it will drop in the early hours of the morning and by the time I put my sport shoes on tomorrow morning, it will be another idyllic Cape Town day.

February begins – the hottest month of the Cape year.

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
